Originally printed in 1944, ONI 41-42 I Japanese Naval Vessels (Volume 1 in a two volume set) presents a categorical description of the various warships that comprised the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII. Created by the Office of Naval Intelligence, it was one of a series of classified recognition guides produced for officers and staff. It contains numerous data tables, designation information, and over 2000 illustrations compiled from a wide variety of sources, including intelligence reports and reconnaissance photographs. The book includes the full catalog of ships in service ranging from the mighty Kongo and Yamato class battleships to the aircraft carriers, heavy cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers, tenders, submarines, mine vessels, transports and tenders that serviced the fleet. ONI 41-42 I is astonishing in its range and detail. Browsing through its pages you’ll find silhouettes, photographs and photos of models, airbrushed renderings and drawings, and detailed plans and profiles of many classes of warship. Throughout the text, the similarities and differences between the various ships are described, and many specific details highlighted, making this a must-have book for the historian and modeler. This high quality reprint of this now-declassified book is slightly reformatted and comes in two volumes. The set presents the original text in its entirety.

Not a good 'read' but a really useful book

I had wondered where all those "ONI" ship diagrams came from and now I've found out. This is not a 'read it' book, this is a 'look it up' reference book. There is no narrative. That's not a knock on it, this book is excellent for what it is (and was).
This is a copy of the naval vessel recognition books that were distributed to the US Navy during WW II. It's not about ship's design, history or capabilities (aside from listing armaments and on what bearings they can be fired). It was to be used to figure out what you were looking at through a pair of spotting glasses or periscope.
Personally, I enjoyed (finally!) having an explanation of the "horizon beyond the ship/ship beyond the horizon" notations I'd see on all the ship Wikipedia articles.
It's also interesting to compare how closely the Office of Naval Intelligence (the "ONI" in the title) got it right based on their limited knowledge compared to what we know now.
I know that the photography of the time was not as excellent as now, and that the Japanese navy wasn't inviting camera-toting naval attache's down to Yokosuka for photo ops, but I think that there is degradation in the reproduction of the photos that are included. Not every picture could have been as dark and blurry as they are in this book.

The only great detractor making this a 4 star product is the ...

The item is exactly what I expected. The only great detractor making this a 4 star product is the printing. The print on several of the pages is bad; I'm not sure if it is because of the source material or the printing of the book. The best description I can give is when you use a copy machine (or laser printer) and the toner does not lay and fuse for a crisp, black print or the pages were scanned from poor documents or a bad scan was done. Aside from that, it's an excellent book to have.
