"Provides much greater insight into the kinds of questions we deal with in our discipline, and raises issues that are more fundamental, theoretical, and structural in nature." - Alan Beck, Santa Fe College

Great Companion Book
By J Grace
This book is outstanding and great for any government class as a companion to any government textbook. It offers opposing viewpoints on common chapters in introductory goverment books. All the information is jneresting and is beneficial to every citizen. It is also great for gov't students hoping to incrase their knowledge and perspective on commonly debated topics in America.

Interesting readings about current debates
By Honest Reviewer
I purchased this book as a requirement for a college course and it was an interesting read all around. So many different sides to current debatable issues kept me interested in it and the book was able to help me pick a side on certain issues I was on the fence about. If you are into debating I would recommend this book.

timely
By W Boudville
Some of these essays are of very recent vintage. See Chapter 6, about defending American domestic liberties during a time of war. The arguments revolve around what measures are necessary to fight terrorism on the home front.

Other chapters also offer pro and con on other issues. Like how polarised is the American electorate? Something quite timely in this year of 2008. Another issue is whether the judiciary is or should be activist in interpreting the constitution.

Lots to get you thinking.

[Following written in 2015] After several more years, and with the disclosures of US excesses unknown when I wrote my earlier comments, the book is still germane.
