About the Author
Rich Martin was a newspaperman for 32 years. For 29 of those years he was a reporter and editor at The Roanoke Times in Virginia, where he worked both with rookies who were still learning how to write basic stories and with experienced reporters and editors who taught him a great deal. He was involved in big stories and small ones, from killer floods and blizzards to major investigations of public officials and public policies. Three projects were finalists for Pulitzer Prizes.
In 2005 he began teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where he is now head of the Department of Journalism. As an editor, he had considered himself a teacher first, working with journalists to help them do a better job of telling readers what they needed and wanted to know about the world around them. Going into a classroom was challenging, but with his experience he felt he could offer beginning journalists guidance about practicing journalism properly in the 21st century.
As the news business continues to change in ways that we may not be able to imagine, Martin hopes that journalists will remain true to the values and principles that have made their field a force for good in society.

Journalism with a heart

Anybody interested in the craft of journalism -- in all of its evolving mediums -- would likely find this to be an engaging book.
One of the things that makes Rich Martin's book special is that he truly cares about journalism and the morality of budding reporters who will carry the torch of truthfulness, accuracy and humanity. Martin was in the newspaper business for 32 years, and it shows. His writing in "Living Journalism" ranges from humorously presented reminders to hardened admonitions to take things seriously and get the facts right -- every time.
Numerous other recommendations abound from Martin. If you want to be a journalist, he says, it pays to always be curious, skeptical, doggedly determined and never overlook society's forgotten people or sectors. Be a watchdog at all times. These teachings can't be said enough if you want to cover news for a living.
There is a modern, on-the-spot feel to "Living Journalism." Martin encourages students to live and breathe the credos of his craft, but the word "Living" in the book's title also indicates an ever-changing fluidity in the media world. Today's reporters should prepare themselves for that.
My only slight complaint about the book is that perhaps more could have been written about the importance of balanced reporting by journalists, in an age when highly partisan opinions and politics are prevalent in the media and online.
Journalism could change even more in the next 10 years, but for now, "Living Journalism" is an up-to-date take on where things are. From tips on how reporters should function during a sudden crisis to the all-too-common misspelling of names, "Living Journalism" offers plenty of on-the-job examples from seasoned reporters who share what they know in a straightforward way.
