This is the first book to lead emerging designers to the salaries they deserve, and author Ted Leonhardt is the first person to dedicate his career to addressing the challenges creative people face.
“Nail It” is a pocket guide that uses real-world stories to demystify the negotiation process. Does negotiating intimidate you? Have you left a meeting with the vague feeling that you caved in too soon? Ted Leonhardt posits that feeling gun-shy and giving in too soon are common in the creative community, and that such costly missteps can be avoided. “Nail It” was inspired by conversations the author had with the 2013 BFA design graduates of the University of Washington, which in turn led to conversations with his friends, clients, and colleagues on their experiences entering the business. Undeniable patterns came to light, ones creative people encounter and struggle with time and again.
Using his own appealing illustrations and a light touch, the author identifies principles and strategies to help designers of every stripe earn more money. In “Nail It” you’ll learn how to:
•Beat back feelings of intimidation when negotiating
•Jumpstart a stalled interview
•Maintain your integrity at every stage of a job search
•Always behave like an expert
•Attract the interviews you want
•Never leave money on the table that should be yours!

About the Author
Seattle native Ted Leonhardt is a graduate of The Burnley School of Professional Art. In 1985, with his wife Carolyn, he established the brand design agency The Leonhardt Group (now FITCH). The Leonhardt Group grew to fifty employees and $10 million in annual fee sales by the time they sold in 1999. Ted and Carolyn then moved to Europe where Ted served as Chief Creative Officer for FITCH Worldwide out of London. Next came a turn as president of Anthem Worldwide, a packaging design group. Since then he has helped design firms and individuals get their fair share of the economic pie through his consulting practice. Ted believes creative people have the power to improve the world, and that often they do not get paid what they deserve. His mission is to change that.

Essential reading for User Experience professionals
By Tracey Lovejoy
Ted is an engaging and powerful speaker, so I was thrilled to learn he had compiled the wisdom he brings to live audiences into a book that is as engaging on paper as he is live.
Ted's book has come at exactly the right time - the world has begun to recognize the importance of Design, but we designers have not yet come to understand what our value is, nor have most of us been trained to ask for what we are worth. This makes Ted's book absolutely essential to all of us in the UX discipline.
As I opened Ted's book the first time I had only intended to quickly skim it to prepare me to read it later, but I found that all of a sudden I was half way through because the real-world stories are compelling, easy to read, grounded in real-world information and so relevant to my own life and experience as a UX professional that the pages and the time flew by.
I highly recommend this to anyone in the UX discipline, whether starting to look for a first job, getting ready to make a change or ready to renegotiate salary - a must read!

An investment, not a cost
By David Airey
It's easy to recommend this book to any designer searching for employment, whether you're looking for your first job or wanting to move on from the one you're in. You'll find some stellar advice on how to negotiate the salary you're worth, all told using case studies I could relate to from my time spent in interviews.
As a very quick example, Ted shares stories about that stage in an interview when the interviewer asks what you were paid in your previous role (or what you expect to be paid if it's your first job). Just a couple of the ideas in the book on how to respond are to turn it around with a question: "What are your expectations for this position? I'd like to get a feeling for what you're looking for." Or you could say, "What I've been paid in past positions isn't relevant to my current value or future performance. I've added valuable skills and experience since then."
As Ted says, don't leave money on the table.

Excellent for everyone, not only designers.
By Amazon Customer
Excellent read and a bargain. This book is recommended for designers but, in my opinion and experience, it has useful information for all professionals, from entry-level to experienced business owners. Ted is objective and fun as he illustrates how to act and react during a series of stressful situations everyone encounters in the professional world, such as interviewing or bidding/negotiating for projects. This book gives quick and valuable information that can make a difference and help professionals nail important negotiations. I wish Ted wrote this book when I first started out!
