Love, love, love the insights on emotional intelligence. It's such a simple concept, really... that there is a huge difference between book smarts, and emotional intelligence. This is going to revolutionize the way I relate to my intellectual and emotional life. It was wonderful to have my eyes opened. J. J . Eastman is an excellent writer and presents a great deal of thought-provoking content. I like that it teaches you everything you want to know about emotional intelligence. I found this book to be very informational and encouraging if one doesn't "score" high on emotional intelligence. It really explains the difference between being smart and being wise. Furthermore; it says that these are skills that can be learned, but like everything else requires work. The author talks about exceptional psychological principles and he puts it in plain english. This book is the gold standard, well written, and practical. I enjoyed the information immensely; plus this book has helped me understand myself more than I did before. This is the book you want to buy to help you understand yourself and the people around you.

You never really take time to think about the difference between emotional intelligence and just plain old intelligence. I always judge intelligence in a person by the way they hold themselves and the way they speak to me or others when presented with a question. Emotional intelligence is what is needed to be able to show others that you truly are intelligent as those that lack it will show their lack of true intelligence in the way they speak and carry themselves. I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the various stages, or ways that you can define emotional intelligence. Definitely a book that I will be coming back to time and time again! Sometimes I don't quite show my emotional intelligence, as can be proven by my wife!

This gentleman clearly stated the difference between intelligence and emotional intelligence. There is a difference between knowing a job and being really good at that job and knowing people, in order to succeed you need to understand both. Emotional intelligence is having self control of your emotions not manipulating others threw emotions. Being emotionally intelligent gives you self-awareness and a better understanding of people which makes so much sense to me. I love this book. I really enjoyed reading this guys journey about getting to know people and becoming emotionally intelligence. It is something that everyone would love to be. Lets be honest!!

About the Author

Anthony R. Pratkanis earned his Ph.D. in 1984 from the famed social psychology program at the Ohio State University. His research program has investigated such topics as the delayed effects of persuasion, attitudes and memory, groupthink, affirmative action, subliminal persuasion, mass communications, source credibility, persuasion and democracy, economic fraud, the use of influence in international conflicts, and a variety of influence tactics such as the pique technique, phantoms, the projection tactic, the 1-in-5 prize tactic, and altercasting.

He has appeared in the mass media over 500 times as an expert on social influence processes, has been called as an expert witness in numerous advertising deceptiveness cases, and served as a consultant to AARP, NASD, and other law enforcement and civic groups on countering the undue influence used in fraud crimes and to the United States military on countering the propaganda of terrorists and dictators.

He is the co-author (with Elliot Aronson) of Age of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion and (with Doug Shadel) of Weapons of Fraud: A Source Book for Fraud Fighters.

Anthony Pratkanis is the founding editor of Social Influence, a new scientific journal from Psychology Press.

A Book that will Influence Your thinking

Whether you are a social psychologist or someone who wants to become more persuasive in the workplace, you will find this book to be a worthy investment.

Anthony Pratkanis, a social psychologist who is frequently cited in the persuasion literature, brings together prominent names in the field who cover a lot of ground, with each chapter devoted to a different topic. This book follows Pratkanis' earlier book about social influence, the popular "Age of Propaganda," which he wrote with Elliot Aronson.

Two things set this text apart. One is that unlike some books about influence that were written by consultants, this book is grounded in the rich behavioral psychology research that provides insight to why people think and behave as they do. The second distinguishing characteristic of this text is that the material is understandable to people outside of academia, such as the business professional who has a serious interest in learning about the principles that lie behind the influence process.

Pratkanis begins the book with a comprehensive chapter about useful tactics you can use in three different ways: when you are creating an atmosphere where persuasion can occur, when you are crafting the message, and when you are trying to tap into your audience's emotions.

The book will help you understand how social norms affect our ability to persuade others, how we can overcome resistance, why consistency is so important to people in our culture, and why leaders misuse their influence.

Excellent textbook for review, but this is not a first course.

In the author's preface, he states that the prerequisites are "one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis at the undergraduate level". So, this book cannot be judged as an 'intro to real analysis'.

I just want to comment on how I have experienced this book. Let me mention that I am using this for self-study after completing a course using Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (we covered every chapter except Ch. 10 on integration in R^n). I picked this up to review analysis with the goal of covering function spaces and measure theory with more emphasis that Rudin. This book does just that! But, I also wanted a book that stays in R for the Lebesgue measure. Having read the first 3 chapters of Folland, I didn't really think I 'understood' the material even though I could do the exercises (but not without a lot of sweat and coffee). (At one point I felt I became a function: [input] facts, assumptions then [output] proofs, ie hw exercises.) Folland does everything for abstract measures and treats the Lebesgue measure as a corollary.

Having said that, this books hits the spot.

A previous reviewer said this book was informal, unprofessional, and chatty. I do agree with him on that the book is very informal in the exposition and is chatty. I feel that this might be very distracting for those who do not wish to be specialists in analysis, or to those who are seeing analysis for the first time. However, for someone who has finished, say Baby Rudin, this book IS AMAZING. His chatty 'foreshadowing' is the best part, since by now you are trying to see the 'big picture'. In this respect, the chattiness tells of the shortcomings of the previous theory and points one to the right questions to ask.

I think this book shines for the purpose of an intermediate course between Baby Rudin and graduate real analysis ala Folland. As such, the exercises are at the perfect level and include standard, important, and interesting results and extensions. I don't think this book is rigorous enough for a real course at the graduate level, however.

A final note, the editorial (why?)'s placed throughout do get annoying but I feel they make sure you do not take results for granted, an all too common habit when reading advanced math.

I highly recommend this text, especially for self-study.
This book is like taking a course one who loves the subject and knows it very well.
And what is more, she wants to communicate her knowledge to you.
She has anticipated your difficulties and is prepared to guide you.
The material is well motivated; the historical asides help you understand and appreciate the material even more.
There are a lot good exercises.
One caveat is that analysis is on R not R^n.
The material is pitched at the senior level.
I wish I had this book when I was studying this subject.
