Tell us a little bit about your book – who is it aimed at and how will it help them?
Our book is directed primarily toward l doctors, midwives, nurses, and educators, but also we find that doulas and childbirth educators also find it valuable. To our knowledge, The Labor Progress Handbook is the only book that focuses on safe, effective, low-technology, low-cost, low-risk ways to maintain and enhance labor progress.

These are all strategies that can be tried in non-urgent situations, and may prevent or resolve labor progress problems without the need for the higher-technology and higher risk medical and surgical solutions that are sometimes necessary.

What inspired this new edition of The Labor Progress Handbook?
We wanted to update the topics we have addressed in the previous editions. Also, we wanted to expand the scope of the book to include instruction and research evidence on low technology clinical interventions (manual techniques, medications, and others), for practitioners who prefer a low intervention management style.

We also added a chapter on ways to maintain and promote progress and normalcy in the third and fourth stages of labor. We have a new contributor for these chapters, Lisa Hanson, CNM, PhD. To accommodate this new material, along with updates throughout the book, this edition is about 100 pages longer than the previous one.

What differentiates your book from others in the field?
We are not aware of any other book that combines all the same information in one source. Also, our first 8 chapters serve as a text, with in-depth, evidence-based discussion and explanations. The last two chapters – the “Labor Progress Toolkit” --are formatted for quick reference when working with a laboring woman.

Why did you feel it was important to include two new chapters, one on low technology interventions and one about management of the third and fourth stages?
As stated above, we felt the new chapters round out the topics and make for a comprehensive approach to the whole of labor, and offer more effective ways to minimize the need for high intervention management techniques.

Dr. Hanson contributed her expertise, making the book more useful for medical and nursing professionals looking for updated information. These new chapters also help doulas and childbirth educators understand and assist when low technology approaches are used.

What do you feel are the reasons for the success of The Labor Progress Handbook over the years?
We wrote the LPH because we were aware of a large number of labor progress strategies, but they had never been gathered systematically into one publication. We were very concerned over the rapid increase in primary cesareans, most of which were done for inadequate progress in labor.

Our intention was to compile and present every effective and safe low-intervention technique to maintain or restore labor progress. Care providers need a quick reference to the many low-risk, ‘primary’ interventions that can be tried, before implementing higher-tech, higher risk interventions.

Invaluable information!

I am a birth doula and I just finished reading through this book. I cannot believe how much information is in this book! It is well organized and provides evidence based ways to promote a "normal" labor. Though it was written for care providers, I can see the information in this book greatly helping me in future births. Not only do I have a greater understanding of what the nurses, midwives, and doctors are can do, but I can implement a lot of the interventions as well- such as knowing which positions help turn a baby who is OP. And when an intervention is beyond my scope, I can still explain to the family (if needed) how the intervention is designed to help.

The only reason I decided on a 4-star rating is for the Kindle version of this book. There were a few minor typos and grammatical errors. None of them made the material unreadable, but it was annoying.

Excellent reference for natural childbirth

As an obstetrics provider, this is an excellent manual for helping deliveries progress naturally and decreasing your cesarean section rate. The book makes great suggestions for encouraging labor progress with position changes, etc before proceeding to medical interventions that also carry greater risk. Evidence-based with excellent references after each chapter. Perfect for anyone involved in the care of women during labor & delivery, including OB/GYN's, Midwives, MD's, RN's, and Doulas.

A beautiful blend of nature and science

This is must-have in my doula bag! It is a wealth of information. It very clearly offers techniques to help assist in labor progression and also thoroughly explains the how, why, and when these techniques are useful. As a doula, it also clarifies for me why care providers might make certain decisions during a labor. I am very interested in science and enjoy reading medical journals and such. This is not nearly as dry as such articles and has many illustrations throughout, but it is more scientifically based than a lot of similar books. They provide a ton of evidence-based information. Although it is a bit pricey, I found it to be totally worth it.

Goodbye, Columbus is a coming of age story, a summer romance between a poor boy and a wealthy girl. Many themes that were to show up in much more detail in his later works are presented in embryonic form in this novella, his first major work. Being Jewish in America, sex, class boundaries, the American Way: All Roth subjects, all handled with intelligence and compassion.

Neil is the typical poor Jewish boy enamoured with Brenda, the classy, self-assured, rich girl. He shows a rare spark of confidence when he calls her for a date after first meeting her at a swimming pool, when she accepts and they meet, he finds that he really doesn't know what to do from there. But, they bumble through the beginnings of a relationship, mutually attracted physically, diametrically opposed socially. Neil has a few 'poor' ideas and thoughts that Brenda cannot relate to, while she accepts such luxuries as a maid or 'getting her nose fixed' with such ease and complacency that we - and Neil - are amazed. Over the summer, their relationship develops further, with the typical ups and downs of love colouring the journey.

Neil is the 'I' character of the story, and it is through his point of view that we watch the story unfold. However, even though the story is in first person, there is never much of his personality revealed through contemplative thought or reflection. Instead, we learn who he is from the way he interacts with Brenda and others, and from the way he studies the events in which he is involved. By the end of the novella, we (mostly) understand his motives and ideas, and though, admittedly, it is a little difficult to imagine Neil existing outside the scope of the novel, that actually plays into the theme of the story. Neil is searching for meaning, for a reason to keep on existing, and he considers that in Brenda, he has found it. Whether this is true or not becomes a large focus in the novel, particularly when, later on, she repeatedly reveals to him that she is in fact her own person, with her own ideas, and that sometimes they won't mesh with his.

Brenda, on the other hand, remains a complete mystery to both the reader and Neil. Because we are never allowed to see her thoughts, and because her and Neil have such a different social background, she is someone who we try to understand, but inevitably fail. At times, Neil will say or do something and she will become upset, or tender, or both, and Neil will be so confused that he simply accepts. This can be frustrating for the reader, because Brenda is an appealing character, and it would be nice for him to have the gumption to search deeper within her for meaning and thought, but unfortunately he rarely does. Interestingly, this doesn't come off so much as a failing on Roth's part as an author, but Neil's as a character.

As stated above, the typical themes and ideas that Roth was to develop more fully in his later works are present here. There is the same easy insight into the mundane reality of life, and the same simple joy in, say, eating a piece of fruit or swimming in a pool. Goodbye, Columbus is a story that focuses on one single idea, that being the summer romance between two people that could not have a relationship in any other situation, and it explores it in a remarkably fulfilling way. Admittedly, the very Jewish quality of the writing and ideas may not be as identifiable for a non-Jewish person, but speaking as a man of no faith, I didn't find it to be all that much of a problem. Also, the casual racism towards African-Americans may be off-putting, but again, it didn't upset the flow of the novel.

To conclude, what Roth has done here is to introduce himself as an author, and for a twenty-six year old, it is an impressive introduction. Having read other works of his, I would recommend it as a good starting point. If you like Goodbye, Columbus - and I am quite certain everyone would - then you will love his later works. If not, not. And at only 140 pages, it is worth everyone's time to check out.

Preferred for history and sights over alternative titles

Eyewitness is my preferred travel guide for history and sights over alternative brands of travel book.

It doesn't have all the hotel and restaurant info that some of the others do, but that kind of info gets out of date so quickly and can all be found online.

I'm pretty sure the restaurants and places listed in these books will be around for years to come. Most of the info is about structures and attractions which don't change very often.

The pull-out maps are quite handy if you can bring yourself to actually tear them out of the book!

I read through these at home but am going to purchase the Kindle versions for use on my iPad mini while traveling.

Eyewitness Germany

Eyewitness always does a very nice treatment of the target country. For me this was more of a planning/what's possible book than an actual guidebook you would carry along with you (it's a bit heavy). Use Rick Steve's for that. I seem to remember being more impressed with the first one I bought years ago (France), the one on Germany had plenty of pictures, but many of them seemed very tiny, almost like thumbnails, making it hard to appreciate the subject. Nevertheless, a great reference for planning a trip, and highly recommended.

This was a very good guide, even excellent

This was a very good guide, even excellent. However, some of the map information seemed to be lacking. In some cases when I was trying to locate something on a particular map and the coordinates were given, the map did not contain the coordinates. The restaurant section could contain more recommendations in some of the cities. All in all, I found this guide to be excellent except for the above mentioned problems. The sightseeing sections are the best there are of any guides.

Another area of research that has exploded in the past 20 years is string theory. Hawking and Mlodinow provide one of the most lucid discussions of this complex topic ever written for a general audience. Recognizing that much of their audience will also be science fiction buffs, they include a chapter on the possibility of time travel. "Don't bet on it," the authors advise. Theoretical physicist Hawking became an international celebrity thanks to his cosmological primer Brief History of Time (1988), one of the twentieth century's biggest best-sellers. According to Hawking, one copy of Brief History has been sold for every 750 people on earth (move over, Scarlett O'Hara!). While Brief History amassed that sales record, however, its subject matter didn't stand still, and some kind of overhaul, Hawking and Mlodinow say, came to seem necessary. They chose to revise in the direction of lesser length, more illustration, and greater accessibility as they updated to incorporate developments in string theory, new indications that a unified theory of physics--one that comprehends gravity as well as the three other physical forces--is possible, and new observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. Few will be sorry for their choice, for Briefer History may be the clearest introduction to physics ever, and not just because it eschews equations, though that helps. Its clarity arises from firmly adhering to the concept announced by the second chapter's title, "Our Evolving Picture of the Universe." The book is the developmental portrait--a biography, if you will--of the idea of a dynamic cosmos, which took long to catch on: even Einstein, whose relativity theories "broke" the idea as nothing before had done, clung to a cosmological constant (which, Hawking and Mlodinow show, yet has its uses) in the face of quantum mechanical indeterminacy. The right book at the right time...

My first venture into cosmology and physics. After seeing the movie "The Theory of Everything" I was compelled to explore Hawking's work. I was able to read the written words and get a sense of Hawking's points but I can't say I truly understand. I am pleased to have a better knowledge of this phenomenal quest mankind has pursued to understand how and perhaps why we are here. My personal beliefs of God and religion have dramatically shifted from Catholicism to Agnostic/ Atheist recently. I find this book helpful in grappling with my uncertainty on the existence of God. I intend to study further this fascinating subject.
I found the biographic tidbits about Einstein, Galileo and Newton very entertaining and enlightening.

Great for kids as well as adults.

A curious sixth grader, interested in science, loved this. I got it for him because I thought it gave a fantastic treatment of astronomy and physics relating to space and time, at a general reading level, while the school curriculum's treatment of space was pretty shallow and repetitive. This eleven year old feels he has learned tons, and wants to read it over and over because it is so fascinating.
