A must read!

Although the introduction says that this is intended for people that have been working for 10+ years or so and that are looking to chage careers, as a recent law graduate, I also found it extremely helpful. The theory exposed in the book is a departure from conventional doctrines that provides the reader with a fresh and organic perspective on professional growth. I found that the book was particularly effective in relieving my anxiety about deciding what career path I want to take. At its core, it teaches that it is ok to not have a detailed and clear idea of what you want your career to be, because the right opportunities will always show up and the choices that you make will eventually lead you to where you want to be.

Self-Assertive tone, dry read, self-conflicting ideas

I really wanted to like this book and help me investigate a new strategy on how to explore my different passions. However, I just couldn't connect with the writing style. Although the author offers many approaches that have also worked for me, the tone of voice and dryness of the examples was overbearing. There are also many self-conflicting points. The author argues that a test and learn approach to finding what works for us is preferred to planning and implementing, but fact is that it takes planning and implementing to test and learn. They're complementary, not competing ideas. Even some of her case studies describe a process of planning before trying things. The whole thing feels like Mrs. Ibarra is trying to fit real life examples into her "framework," shut all other concepts and approaches to the journey of finding one's passion, in an effort to establish herself as a thought leader in the field and keep herself relevant at Insead.
Living one's passion, in my opinion, involves a journey of self-exploration. In asking ourselves what we want to do, we need to first answer who we are. Defining our values, what we see as success, what our history and present say about us... Unfortunately, Mrs. Ibarra doesn't explore much else beside "try different jobs." In my opinion, a very shallow effort. The concept of understanding oneself is left completely out. Even if one finds something they enjoy doing by adopting this approach, I doubt that they will understand Why, and live a blind life.
I read chapter 1 and was left frustrated at the tone of voice, then I skimmed over sections of chapter 2 and 3 and disagreed with so much of the content... Sorry, not my cup of tea. Good luck to all those that try the author's tactics.
What do I suggest instead?
I recommend "no fears no excuses" by Larry Smith for those that feel stuck in their careers, and "how to measure your life" by Clayton Christensen for those that want a perspective on how to be happier. They're in my opinion, much more comprehensive material on the question of "how can I be happier"

I wish I had found this book five years ago! Yet I wasn't ready for it then...

I am not sure that I would have been ready for Dr. Ibarra's book in 2005 when I finally paid attention to the signals in my own environment that I needed a massive career change. I'm not sure that I would have heard its message, which is part of the point of the book as well.
It would have helped me, however, realize that what I was going through was "normal". This book shakes up the myths that you need to discover what you are good at and make an educated series of career research actions and decisions. For most of us who have done the seemingly random walk through career and life transitions, she provides a backdrop of case studies to show patterns of uncertainties that happen to many other people as well. She illustrates well how the people around you signal and reinforce both change and drag factors, how the narratives develop over time in your new life, and how the new stories of your new life only start to make sense toward the END of the transition.
I found the academic connections and endnotes refreshing, attaching this work to research and core theories in major thinkers. The examples were easy to relate to and memorable.
I have recommended this book so far to a dozen friends over 40 who are trying to understand the smoke signals of change in their own lives, struggling through long transitions (exacerbated by the economic malaise), or staring at the tensions between their current work environments and the ticking timeclock of their lives. I have taken personal notes throughout my Kindle version of this on my iPad and keep rereading and thinking through the document -- nice way to enjoy this book!
