Author, Jinho Lee, trained in the external martial arts for fifteen years, but did not find the key. After switching his training from external to internal martial arts, he learned much more than martial arts skills from them. Wisdom and enlightenment awaited him at the end of the training.

He came to Western society in 2008 and found that many people had misconceptions about martial arts. Most people could not accept the traditional way, as businessmen had ruined it. Modern people are familiar with the commercial dojo system, so it is hard to make the traditional method of training appeal to them. This book shows how the martial/energy arts market in Western society appears from the view of a person who has trained in the internal arts in Asia in the traditional way.

The internal arts system sounds as if it goes against common sense. It does not use the general muscles to create power. You should connect to the earth and the heaven, and then use their power. What you need to do is to make your body a carrier. Then, you will be able to transmit the power to your opponent. Switching your body system takes a long time, as people have developed bad habits while they were growing up. What he can say about internal arts is simply:

"Relax and empty yourself, then the earth and the heaven will be your side".

"Remove your strength, then you will be able to get the force."

Brilliant! Unique and Valuable - blazes new territory!

As a martial arts practitioner of 30 years, I am very impressed by this book. There is some difficulty in reading, due to the author's English translation. Having said that, I still have no hesitation in giving this book 5 stars because its content is brilliant. I'm always checking out books related to martial arts and I've read them all. What makes this book so different is the author's depth of understanding of the internal martial arts and his integration of all that he has learned. Chi energy, physics, body mechanics, leverage, gravity, balance and motion - these subjects are completely missing from most martial arts books, but Lee's book covers them in depth and brings fresh insight into the actual practice of martial arts that is profound, useful and accessible. I thought I had read it all when it came to martial arts, but Mr. Lee is offering solid answers to questions that most martial artists never ask, and should. Highly recommended, especially for those seeking to understand the amazing power of the internal martial arts and how our bodies work when performing them.

Great Explanation and Overview of Internal Martial Arts

Perhaps the best thing about this book is that that author speaks from expereince in several difference internal martial arts, as well as earlier experience in external arts, so that he is able to explain concepts from different arts, and from their different perspectives, giving the reader a broad view. In many cases, he provides the terms for the concepts discussed in not only his native Korean, but also Chinese and/or Japanese forms, aside from the English explanations. This increases the value of the book. Furthermore, at least far as my own experience goes, I do believe that the "Key" is truly in this book; the title doesn't exaggerate. That being said, doubtless it takes at least some practice to be able to recognize it for what it is.

This is not a criticism, but buyers should be forewarned, so as not to be surprised, that the writing is - as the author readily states in the beginning - clearly that of a non-native-speaker. So, some of the words and phrasing are unusual, BUT this does not detract from the information and message. I would like to see an edition that is nicely edited in the future, though.

The author does a great job at explaining the concepts of the internal arts using illustrations and language that is easy to understand. Speaking as a complete beginner, the book is easy to follow and provides a wealth of insight into the world of the internal arts. I have since had the opportunity to learn from the author and observed various elements in the book being put into practice. Would absolutely recommend this book for anyone interested in the internal arts, especially beginners.

About the Author
Stephanie Arnold received her B.A. degree in English from Stanford University and then continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin where she received an M.F.A. degree in directing and a Ph.D. in dramatic literature and theory. Before joining the Lewis & Clark College faculty in 1986, she taught at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside.

Stephanie Arnold teaches acting, directing, and dramatic literature including a special topics course in Latino Theatre. The productions she has directed include works by classical and contemporary playwrights as well as musicals and opera. She is currently at work on the fifth edition of her textbook, The Creative Spirit: An Introduction to Theatre, which is published by McGraw-Hill and in use at colleges and universities around the country. She has recently returned from leading the Lewis & Clark College off campus study program to New York City.

Creative way to teach Theatre to Non Majors

The class I teach is called APPROACHING THE ARTS: THEATRE. The University also offers Introduction to Theatre. I use this book because it contains the complete text of six good plays. Plays are the cornerstone of theater. Ms. Arnold uses these plays to demonstrate how different theatre artists approach their art. For instance there is a chapter on the Playwright that uses August Wilson's play JOE TURNER HAS COME AND GONE to teach how a playwright approaches writing a play, and what inspires a playwright. She uses each play to teach a part of theatre: acting, design, etc. I highly recommend this book as a means to get non theater people interested in making theater a life long habit.

If you have to take it because it's required, don't worry, you'll enjoy the book. It was easy to read and understand as it was enjoyable.

Regardless of what page you pick up this story from... it engrosses and captivates, challenges and encourages. My heart was often wrenched, but mostly, uplifted as I laughed through tears in my eyes at Edith's witty outlook in the most dire of circumstances. That God can carry on such a complete work of restoration across distant continents and through new generations offers hope for access to a loving Father in the most entangling of messes.
If you are looking for a prescriptive story... this is not it... BUT if you are thirsty and searching for fresh hope that God is not by any means phased by our often muddied and complex life stories; that in fact, He has strength enough and love enough to come right into our murky midst and weave a tapestry of grace for His glory and our restoration... this is it!
You will fall in love with God all over again!

Binchy is a wonderful storyteller, drawing the reader into the hearts of her characters. This engrossing examination of friendship's vicissitudes moves forward effortlessly at a marvelous pace, carrying the reader along on tense, mounting waves of loyalty and deceit. I read this book many years ago, and, for some reason, decided to read it again. It does start off very slowly, in my opinion, but eventually the reader falls in love with most of the characters. There are several witty scenes that make the reader laugh out loud and as many that bring tears. I truly have felt many of the same feelings as Benny and Eve, so this is the main reason that I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Terrific Binchy book!

An admission comes first: I am a fan of Maeve Binchy's books and the small town Irish families that people her books. This is a great example of what Binchy does best - she introduces the reader to a varied, interesting cast of characters, then she weaves their lives together in both expected and unexpected ways. "Circle of Friends" chronicles the evolving relationships of Benny, a young woman from a small town near Dublin entering university. At the beginning of the book, the over-protected Benny has one good friend, a quiet orphan raised in the local convent. The two set out on widely separated paths, but their lives are changed by an accident and the group of college students they meet through it. Benny matures from a shy, only child to a young adult, confident in her choices and future .
Two of the things I loved about this book was how clearly Binchy delineates each character and how deftly she intertwines their lives in the storyline. I think I could almost go to the town and greet them without a preliminary introduction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Howard J. Berman is the Chairman of The Center for Community Engagement at St. John Fisher College. In April 2003 he retired as CEO of Lifetime Healthcare Companies, the parent company of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, a position he held since 1985. Berman is the author of A Great Board: Building and Enhancing Nonprofit Boards (Health Research & Educational Trust, 2003) and co-author with Lewis E. Weeks of Shapers of American Health Care Policy: An Oral History (Health Administration Press, 1985) and Financial Management of Hospitals (Health Administration Press, eight editions, 1972-95). He has chaired, served on and reported to numerous boards.

Reading for Education!

Currently working through this book as part of the required reading material for a Grad School class, working toward a degree in public administration.
This is a very informative book. The wording is thick and dry as I had expected, but the content is very good. I am learning a good deal about processes and reasoning. I am really enjoying the read, despite the time required to get the reading done.
I must admit, I am looking forward to graduating and being able to put all of this information to work!
Overall, very pleased with the book and also pleased with the price considering it was a required text!

Simple yet beautiful and functional

It is a small paper back book with black and white pages in it. There are places for photos or drawings and lined spaces for writing. Beautiful borders that could be colored. Just like the title states it is a DIY (do it yourself). I think it will be a great addition to our homeschool. An easy and beautiful way to record field trips.

Wonderful Field Trip Journal

I love the concept behind the DIY Journal books , especially the Field Trip Journal. We try to take a lot of field trips over the course of our homeschool year and what a better way to document each of those trips than with the DIY- Field Trip Journal. Each page inside this neat little journal is blank so that your child may write on the lined pages or draw pictures on the blank pages or use it as a Field Trip scrap book. The pages are outlined in a detailed border so that you may either leave them as they are or color them in with markers or colored pencils. My girls have decided to do both with their Field Trip Journals. They write down pertinent information regarding each field trip, sketch photos, save ticket stubs, take photos to print and save. It's the smartest and cutest little book I have ever seen. I do not know what we have done without the Field Trip Journal all of these years until now.

I love The idea behind the Field Trip Diary. We will take this book on each one of our field trips. We will take a photograph and attach it inside and the children can write and draw their own pictures of the field trip. This is an excellent idea for your home school and a nice way of tracking of field trips for the school year.

Is it possible to be even more amazing than the first book?

In short.......stunning contents more fantastic than his first book!

Longer review? My fingers are ready to fly across these keys! I can safely say that the majority of people were beyond happy with the long-awaited first book from master sugar artist, Carlos Lischetti. Devotees were begging him to share his skill, knowledge, and artistic perfection of his sugar creations. In short, his works are amazing. So many people loved his work but could not attend his classes, as he is located in England, though he does travel to teach as well. So next best thing is a book, right?

If you peruse the cake decorating websites and magazines and blogs, you cannot help seeing his sugar projects everywhere. Fantasy caricatures of people, places, and things made from modeling paste. But they looked so perfect, so flawless, that you wondered if it was possible to be as good as he is but then.........Carlos, with the help of his equally talented twin brother (who is a crazy-talented artist of photography and illustration in his own right), produced "Animation in Sugar", his first book that introduced us to his instruction on this sugar art.

Fast forward to "Animation in Sugar: Part 2" and you are treated to more instruction and inspiration from the master. This book is large and heavy with 256 pages of voluminous teaching and photography, that includes detailed step-by-step photography, in close-up detail, and in full and glorious color; there are no black and white tutorials. The pages have a nice satin sheen to them and you can "feel" the quality and effort placed into this book.

Some of the projects in this book were ones that I had hoped were in his first book, but were not, therefore I saved those photos of his creations for inspiration. But this second book had all the projects that I hoped for, so now I don't know which one to start first. The great part of this sugar art is that you can tailor-make this to whatever and whomever you want to characterize, as many details of the projects are basic to any structure. The figures can be as large or small as you wish so the scope of the size won't overwhelm you.

The one project that I love, which is the Geisha Girl, is the same one that is on the cover and dust jacket and it is just perfection. I love the deep red of her kimono.

Without giving away too much detail, here is some insight into this book: There are 15 projects offered, ranging from adorable animals to caricatured people ranging from playful to sentimental celebrations. The first 25 pages deal with equipment and recipes, then presentation of the modeling paste he uses. Some might note that the names used for between here and Europe can be different but the paste is till the same. The "glue" recipes used to build images is given, along with prepping cakes before, or after, you make the images.

My most favorite part is of course, the figurines! But before you can really get into creating them, you have to know the body part basics, and coloring (whether using food paste colors or airbrushing); this is discussed in detail. Another welcomed addition is the logistics of transporting your figurines so that they are well-protected en route to their destination.

Then the fun begins: who or what are you going to make? Dogs or piggies? A plumpy Italian chef? Halloween goblin? A sweet wedding couple? These are just a few of the 15 figures Carlos teaches.

The last pages are the templates and schematics of the projects that can be enlarged of course. Both the inside and back covers have adorable pencil caricatures that his brother, Elio, drew as the fantasy of each project became reality.

As far as who would find this easy enough, it is obviously perfect for someone experienced, but even for a novice, with patience and time, this would be great for building confidence and skill.

Good instructional

I bought this for my daughter who is a baker. She called to tell me she loved the book. Although she didn't need it for the baking references the figure sculpture was very instructive with excellent sequential pictures. It was interesting to her because her mother (who does not cook) does sculptures in clay and helped her understand the skill needed.

Love carlos Lichetti!

I was so excited to get my new book in the mail. I absolutely love Carlos Lichetti's work. He's a master at sugar art and his instructions are easy to follow--I bought his first book and made many of the sugar figurines without too much difficulty. It does take practice and a love for creating beautiful things from sugar. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to make beautiful things from sugar, fondant, and cake.

Clearly an outstanding work, but too theoretical

The thing I found very hard to understand though, were the initial chapters centered around "marginal opinion". I think the author builds on top of a an "assumed" foundation which is a demanding prerequisite indeed! Once the central idea of Net Present Value is well understood, then putting it to practice is far-far easier than to read through rest of the chapters. The case studies might be more useful though! But I haven't gotten to that stage yet. Since finance/investing is not my profession, I am inclined to review the book through the lens of practicality than through theoretical value - And that makes me critical of anything that is non-procedural information.

amazing work of finance and economics

Warren Buffet mentioned this as one of the most important works in investment and finance. It is an amazing read though one needs to go very slow.It has lots of details on investment, dividends, interest rates and correlation of all the factors in order to arrive at an intrinsic valuation. The concepts of marginal opinion, dividend discount model valuations, economics of dividends & interests as well as the detailed idea of impact of taxation are amazing. Indeed as John Burr Williams defines this book himself as a work for scientist & economists rather than a maxim for speculators. This book has been a foundation of investment philosophies of Markowitz, Buffet and many others.

An important work

The Theory of Investment Value is clearly an important work, as reflected in Benjamin Graham's citations to it and the prevalence of the dividend discount model in valuing stocks. The theories expounded in this book are of particular import to those to seek to by stock at a value less than the intrinsic value of a company as they determine it to be.

The book itself initially appears intimidating, as there are a lot of mathematical equations, but in reality, the math is nothing more than simple algebra, mostly different models related to computing dividend values going forward.

I found the book to be an interesting read, but it is highly theoretical in nature. The central theme of the book is that stocks are worth the present value of their dividends, paid in perpetuity. It does not discuss earnings manipulation, effect of dilution, securities with superior or inferior claim to payment, etc. Moreover, as Graham points out in Security Analysis, companies that have a high return on invested capital would be well advised to reinvest their profits, while less successful companies would be better off paying higher dividends (relative to book value). This would, of course, tend to make the practical application Williams' theory somewhat complicated, insofar as it makes computing future dividends more difficult.

Readers looking for a more practical guide to valuing stocks might be better served reading Securities Analysis by Benjamin Graham, or any number of more "practical" books related to stock market analysis, particularly as those analyzing financial statements to determine the intrinsic value of a company. Some readers might also find "The Aggressive Conservative Investor" by Marty Whitman and Martin Shubik to be a good read for a competing view, since the authors of that book take the position that, with respect to non-controlling shareholders, a company's stock is worth the net after-tax cash that they expect to realize in the future, whether from dividends, liquidating events, etc. However, if a reader is truly interested in obtaining an understand of how dividends affect stock prices, the book is a worthy read.
