Great book!
By Brutally Honest Reviews
I am an advanced wire worker but really only an intermediate at best solderer so I was a little nervous, but after getting this book yesterday I made one of the projects and it was so EASY! And so QUICK! Couldn't get over it, and now I have a beautiful silver filigree and amber pendant, made in under an hour.

I cheated as well: filigree wire is next to impossible to find here in Australia so I used my ordinary twisted square wire from wire working (21 gauge) and it came out just beautiful.

Silver Filigree Jewelry
By Rebecca of Amazon
"Patterns similar to filigree have been spotted in Viking jewelry as early as AD 800. Danish goldsmiths brought them back to Norway in the late 17th and early 18th centuries..."

If you have always wanted to make your own jewelry or want to make and sell filigree jewelry, this book has all the information you need to get started. The first few pages take you through a wide variety of jewelry from many countries. The hinged purse necklace in the shape of a heart is fascinating as are the butterflies that look like stained glass.

"Plique--jour is a variation on piercing where the pierced filigree is filled with transparent enamels. This technique produces the look of fine stained glass on a very small scale." ~ pg. 15

The tricky part of making this jewelry seems to be the removal of oxidation that forms during the heating process. The first chapter is essential to read more than once, maybe ten time...to make sure you know how to use the chemicals discussed. The author recommends you use Sparex - she says is in a granular form that can be added to hot water.

Items needed to begin making jewelry include a torch, soldering surface, pliers, jeweler's saw, ring mandrel, hammers, files, dust collectors, tweezers, etc. These are all listed with pictures and more information.

Project in this book include:

Dangle Earrings

Pendants

Four-Leaf Clover

Heart Pendant

Swirl Ring

Fan Dangle Necklace

Winged Design (like on cover)

Once you read how jewelry is made it gives you an even deeper respect for the artisans who accomplish such mastery over silver enhanced with gemstones.

New technique
By Anna Powers
I finally received my book after a long, long wait but it was worth it. This is a subject that I have never seen covered in any other book. Filigree has been a lost art. The photos of the projects looked daunting to me at first but, after reading the author's clear instructions, I found that I was no longer feel daunted. The photos are exceptional and clearly show all I need to know. I feel fairly sure that with the book at my side I will be able to accomplish the projects in this book. It's also a tease. I couldn't help thinking of all the things I could do with this technique that I had never thought of before. The book, once I master the technique, will open up a world of design that wasn't open to me before. That's the glory of learning. It takes us to new heights.

Lots of silversmithing books are on the market but, often, they leave something out and I am left wondering what to do next. This book is not like that. It should be clear to the beginner and an inspiration to the more advanced silversmith. I'm very glad I bought it.

Murder at the Manor: A British Library Crime Classic (British Library Crime Classics)From Poisoned Pen Press

The English country house is an iconic setting for some of the greatest British crime fiction. This new collection gathers together stories written over a span of about 65 years, during which British society, and life in country houses, was transformed out of all recognition. It includes fascinating and unfamiliar twists on the classic ‘closed circle’ plot, in which the assorted guests at a country house party become suspects when a crime is committed. In the more sinister tales featured here, a gloomy mansion set in lonely grounds offers an eerie backdrop for dark deeds.
Many distinguished writers are represented in this collection, including such great names of the genre as Anthony Berkeley, Nicholas Blake and G.K. Chesterton. Martin Edwards has also unearthed hidden gems and forgotten masterpieces: among them are a fine send-up of the country house murder; a suspenseful tale by the unaccountably neglected Ethel Lina White; and a story by the little-known Scottish writer J.J. Bell.

From Publishers Weekly
The 16 entries in this British Library crime classics anthology, most dating to the golden age of detective fiction, between the two world wars, will appeal to all lovers of English country house mysteries. Edwards opens with an unsettling Sherlock Holmes story, Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Copper Beeches,” about a governess whose employers require her to perform some rather odd duties, such as cutting off her long hair. Other notable authors of the last century include E.W. Hornung, whose famed “amateur cracksman” Raffles appears in “Gentlemen and Players,” and Anthony Berkeley, who shows his ingenuity in “The Mystery of Horne’s Copse.” Margery Allingham surprises us with “Same to Us,” a short take on the country house party, and Michael Gilbert unravels a past mystery to solve a modern puzzle in “Weekend at Wapentake.” Those looking for comfort on a dark and stormy night will be rewarded. Review
Another delightful volume in the series of Classic British mysteries, concentrating on the Golden Age of Detective Fiction.~~~Presented in chronological order, this set of short stories has some real gems. Although each of these volumes has a unifying theme, the country house in this case, I find that the books also uncover some ideas about what makes up a mystery.~~~In this volume the theme is less detection and more presentation. In some stories the main character is the criminal, in others the murder is named in an unconventional way. One is even more of a thriller than a mystery and two have no murders at all.~~~Each story is introduced with a short description of the author, his typical writings, and something about the story. I love how these put the stories in context.~~~It's another charming volume in a series I just love. (Blogspot)

Absolutely loved this collection! (Blogspot)

Murder at the Manor is another high-quality collection of classic British mystery stories, many of which have seldom, if ever, been collected before. The book provides a spread of carefully constructed puzzles, full of crazed killers, cunning planners, rogues, and wit. There are locked room murders, hidden passages, and strange poisons in play. As the title implies, all of the mysteries take place in that familiar setting: the manor house. Set in a world of its own and large enough to hold a number of family members, servants, and guests, the house and grounds provide plenty of room for murder and suspicion.~~~In tone, the tales range from the serious work of Anthony Berkely in “The Mystery of Hornes Copse” and to the light-hearted parody of “The Murder at the Towers” where E. V. Knox gleefully trots out every possibly mystery trope while still constructing a solid puzzle. G. K. Chesterton is present as well, though not with his familiar detective, Father Brown. Instead, Dr. Adrian Hyde takes the role of sleuth in the wholly unexpected “The White Pillars Murder.” The sleuths themselves range from the respectable to the raffish, each clever and generally accompanied by a sidekick who is slightly less so. The collection is good for the detective fan to keep on hand for when reading time is scarce and there is only time for a short story—or for gobbling down at once because it is too good to wait.~~~Fans of Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and G. K. Chesterton will enjoy this selection of mysteries from their peers and will find new authors to treasure. (NetGalley)

The British stately home takes up a lot of territory in the popular imagination, encompassing novels, movies, and TV serials. The isolation of the countryside surrounding these splendid homes made Sherlock Holmes think of “the impunity with which crime may be committed there.” This addition to the British Library Crime Classics series brings together 16 country-house murder and crime stories, spanning roughly 65 years from pre–WWI to post–WWII, from Arthur Conan Doyle, E. F. W. Hornung, and G. K. Chesterton to Margery Allingham, Nicholas Blake, and Michael Gilbert. Perhaps the most exciting story is “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches,” in which Holmes uncovers a cunning deception and barely escapes with his life. But the entire book is filled with country-house-mystery wonders: the closed-circle puzzle, the dying-message clue, and the sociopathic guest who invades the weekend house party. Edwards, author of the Lake District mystery series, is series consultant for the Crime Classics, and here he provides an absolutely fascinating account of the country-house subgenre in his introduction, as well as enlightening notes at the top of each story. (Connie Fletcher Booklist)

I do enjoy these collections of Golden Age mystery stories, in this instance centered on incidents at British Manor Houses, subject of innumerable novels and films for years. Martin Edwards discusses the setting in his introduction and Arthur Conan Doyle addresses the phenomenon in a story included in this collection, as Watson and Holmes discuss a possible case in The Copper Beeches.~~~'Good heaven's!' I cried. 'Who would associate crime with these dear old homesteads?~~~'They always fill me with a certain horror. It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside?~~~'You horrify me!’~~~’But the reason is very obvious. The pressure of public opinion can do in the town what the law cannot accomplish. There is no lane so vile that the scream of a tortured child, or the thud of a drunkard's blow does not beget sympathy…~~~and then the whole machinery of justice is ever so close ... and there is but a step between the crime and the dock. But look at these lonely houses, each in its own fields, filled for the most part with poor ignorant folk who know little of the law. (loc 215)~~~I enjoyed virtually all of these stories, with my lowest personal rating being a 3* for three of the fifteen. My favorites are The Secret of Dunstan's Tower by Ernest Bramah featuring his blind detective Max Carrados; A Horror at Stavely Grange by J.S.Fletcher, a "who and how" done it; The Mystery of Horne's Copse by Anthony Berkeley Cox; The Murder at the Towers By E.V.Knox which I found very witty; and The Unlocked Window by Ethel Lina White, an effective suspense story even if I did guess a bit before the ending.~~~I heartily recommend this collection for those who enjoy traditional British mysteries or want to give them a try. If you require hard action and lots of gore, this may not be for you. If you've enjoyed some Christie or Sayers or Doyle, etc., I suggest you give this and/or other of Martin Edwards edited collections a try. Lots of fun and good leads for future reading. (GoodReads)

Murder at the Manor is a collection of mystery stories. I am not the short story type person, the only exceptions being Jeffrey Archer’s collections like Twelve Red Herrings or Twist in the Tale. But after reading and enjoying a bunch of reprinted old mysteries by Posined Pen press this year, I decided to give it a try.~~~I think Witness for the Prosecution may be the only ‘short’ I have read belonging to the mystery genre, that too long ago. As the name suggests here, the setting is a British classic mystery setting. And at least some mysteries must be in a manor house type situation.~~~According to me, the problem with mysteries in a short story format is that there is not enough time or not enough words to actually establish a background. What I enjoy about classic mysteries is that the story begins slowly, we get to know the cast of characters, form our own opinions about them. then the crime is committed. Red herrings are strewn. Some investigator appears, and our preconceived ideas are either trashed or proved right. either way, we turn the pages frantically while chewing our nails. The short story does not give much opportunity for all this.~~~One of the stories I liked was about the Druid Circle and the blood on the steps. Then there is the one where a couple of apprentices come to a shattering inference about the case they are investigating.~~~Overall, I think this is a good book to read when you are on the go or in a hurry, when you want a slice of the mystery story but cannot be immersed in a big book. (NetGalley)

There is something about these dark, late autumn evenings that are perfect for a bit of old fashioned mystery and suspense. Murder at the Manor edited by Martin Edwards brings together a fabulous collection of short stories, mysteries that are set in that favourite golden age setting of the country house. As Edwards explains in his introduction, country house crime stories remain as popular as ever. Their appeal is driven particularly by nostalgia for a bygone era. The stories in this collection were written over a period of approximately sixty-five years, and cover a period in which society in Britain and life in those country houses was changing. These stories therefore cover a period before, after and naturally during that period typically referred to as the Golden Age of crime fiction. There are some real gems in this collection, with several well-known authors of these kinds of tales, including Arthur Conan Doyle, E W Hornung, G K Chesterton, Margery Allingham, Ethel Lina White and Nicholas Blake.~~~It is always hard to review an entire collection of stories, so rather than trying to talk about each story I will endeavour to give just a flavour of this superb collection, which I just loved. Each story is prefaced with a short bio of the author, setting the story which follows in the context of the author’s body of work. Several of the authors were new to me, some old friends.~~~In this collection we are treated to a glorious mixture of mystery story ingredients, country house parties, poison, jealousy, strange inscriptions, bizarre and unexplained phenomenon, wills, suspense, jewel theft, amateur sleuths and ingenious policemen.~~~conandoyleThere was only one story in the collection that I had read before, The Copper Beeches by Arthur Conan Doyle, which is the opening story. As a Sherlock Holmes fan, I was happy to read it again. A young woman named Violet Hunter consults Sherlock Holmes as to the wisdom in accepting a position of governess which she desperately needs, the job specifications are very odd her prospective employers requiring her dress in a certain way when asked, and to cut off her hair. Miss Hunter decides to take the position in Hampshire at a house called The Copper Beeches, but it is agreed that Holmes and Watson should be on standby in case needed. It is not long before Holmes and Watson are travelling to Hampshire to meet with Miss Hunter again, and hear the story of her peculiarly sinister employment.~~~The Mystery of Horne’s Copse by Anthony Berkeley was among my favourites (although that could be a fairly long list). As anthony berkeleyMartin Edwards explains:~~~“The story features both Sheringham and another regular Berkeley character, Chief Inspector Moresby, and its twists and turns illustrate why Agatha Christie, among others heaped praise on the ingenuity of Berkeley mysteries.”~~~Anthony Berkeley is a writer I hadn’t read before and this mystery is absolutely brilliant true I had mostly worked out what was going on, but I was desperate to know how it would all be solved. The story revolves a young man, Hugh, who had suffered from shell shock in the First World War. He is the owner of Ravendean, and his cousin Frank who is abroad with his wife, is Hugh’s heir. Happily engaged to Sylvia, his future seems an assured one. Until one night, following dinner with his fianc裠and friends, Hugh finds his car won’t start and decides to walk through Horne’s Copse. Half way through the wood, Hugh stumbles upon the body of his cousin Frank, with a bullet hole through his head. Shocked, supposing his cousin to be in Italy Hugh races off for help, the doctor and the police. On his return with the police and his friend the doctor, Frank’s body is gone, and all sign that Hugh was ever there obliterated.~~~J J BellJ J Bell is another author who was new to me and his story The message on the Sun Dial is superbly executed in which he uses the plot device of the ‘dying message’. Philip Bolsover Wingard (generally known by his middle name) is a man with debts. Bolsover is heir to his more sensible and reliable cousin Philip Merivale Wingard. When Bolsover’s latest forgery of his cousin’s name is discovered by his furious cousin, Bolsover is driven to take extreme action. Later that night, in the grounds of his cousin’s estate a knife is drawn, and a man is murdered. Behind him is left a strange and inexplicable message on the edge of the sun dial. Can anyone fathom what it means, and solve the mystery of the attacker?~~~ethel lina whiteI recently read Fear Stalks the Village by Ethel Lina White, so I was looking forward to reading The Unlocked window which comes toward the end of this collection. I wasn’t disappointed; it’s a fantastic story of suspense, set in a country house where two nurses have care of a very sick patient. The neighbourhood have been terrified by a series of recent murders; nurses have been targeted by a medical student with a grudge.~~~“Nurse Cherry hurried through her round of fastening the windows. As she carried her candle from room to room of the upper floors, she had the uneasy feeling that she was visible to any watcher.~~~Her mind kept wandering back to the bad business of the forgotten oxygen cylinder. It had plunged her in depths of self-distrust and shame. She was overtired, having nursed the patient single-handed, until the arrival, three days ago, of the second nurse. But that fact did not absolve her from blame. “I’m not fit to be a nurse,” she told herself in bitter self-reproach.”~~~Will the unprotected women in the house fall victim to the murderer on the loose, are they really as vulnerable as Nurse Charry starts to fear? I read that whole story with my heart in my mouth. Brilliant, spine tingling stuff! I really must read more Ethel Lina White.~~~Murder at the Manor is a superb collection most especially for fans of the Golden Age. (NetGalley)

It has to be my colonial history that makes me nostalgic for manors, country lanes, country scenes and of course murders most prolific. This was a joy to read as it dealt with all of them and country characters as well. Lady and Lords abound, vicars and curates, butlers, maids, parlour maids, groomsmen, stable hands the lot. Downton Abbey in all its aspects combined with a hint of mystery and murder. Fabulous collection of crime. (NetGalley)

(Feb.) (PW)

Here’s another volume in the British Library Crime Classics series. This time the stories have been chosen because they’re set in country houses, a classic mystery genre. The authors are not forgotten or neglected; the very first story in the book is Conan Doyle’s The Copper Beeches, which must be very well known indeed.~~~I particularly liked The Mystery of Horne’s Copse by Anthony Berkeley, which was truly baffling. Then there’s a very amusing, tongue in cheek story by E V Knox, The Murder at the Towers. Here’s a flavour of it:~~~The gathering consisted, as the inspector had foreseen, of the usual types involved in a country house murder, namely, a frightened stepsister of the deceased, a young and beautiful niece, a major, a doctor, a chaperon, a friend, Mr. Porlock himself, an old butler with a beard, a middle-aged gardener with whiskers, an Irish cook, and two servants who had only come to the place the week before.~~~But whenever Scotland Yard was unable to deal with a murder case—that is to say, whenever a murder case happened at a country house—Bletherby Marge was called in.~~~Bletherby Marge, indeed!~~~For me, the most frightening story is An Unlocked Window. It’s by that interesting writer Ethel Lina White, author of The Wheel Spins, which Alfred Hitchcock filmed as The Lady Vanishes. Two nurses alone with their patient in an isolated house, with a murderer on the loose, an atmosphere of fear and terror and a great twist.~~~I read this courtesy of NetGalley and enjoyed it very much. (NetGalley)

I really enjoy anthologies when they contain grouping of murder mysteries covering a single topic. Martin Edwards is a very good editor of books of this type as he always writes a little history and biography of the authors of the short stories. as with all books of this type some are good whilst others not so much. I had read quite a few stories before , but as a fan of mysteries from the golden ages, how could I not. I really enjoyed revisiting with old friends. A great book if your are pressed for time as most of the stories are short but pack a punch nevertheless. (Goodreads)

Murderers, maniacs and things that go bump in the night...
By FictionFan
Another in the British Library Crime Classics series, this is the third anthology of short stories edited by Martin Edwards, following Capital Crimes, stories set in London, and Resorting to Murder, stories with a holiday theme. This one, as the title makes obvious, is full of stories set in the traditional country house, so beloved of murderers that one can't help but wonder why all the owners didn't sell up and move into a nice little cottage somewhere. Though no doubt the twisted crime writers of the time would have tracked them down even there...

As Edwards says in his introduction, the country house is an ideal setting for the 'closed circle' type of mystery, where the suspects are defined by their presence in the house. It's from this that the old clich of “the butler did it” arises, though in fact this rarely was the solution. (In one of these stories, though, the butler did indeed do it, but I'm not telling which one...)

Several of the stories come from the Golden Age between the two wars, but there are also earlier and later ones. Many of the authors who appeared in the previous collections turn up again here and, as usual, they range from household names to the pretty much forgotten. One thing I've found, as I've read more of these short stories and some of the novels the British Library has revived, is that there's a good reason for why some authors have remained popular while others have faded from the public consciousness. While the anthologies are interesting for seeing how the genre developed over time, there's no doubt that the quality of the stories is variable, and with a few exceptions the better ones are from the authors whose names are still more familiar.

Although all of the stories contain a crime, some of them are really more horror than detective and, in fact, I tended to enjoy these more. Overall, I found this collection a little less enjoyable than the other two, though whether that's because the average quality is lower or just that I've surfeited on vintage crime for the moment, I'm not sure. However, as always, there are enough good stories to make the collection well worth reading. I'm not sure reading all of these anthologies so close together does them proper justice, but I do recommend them individually, depending on what setting you prefer to satisfy your murderous impulses... 3 stars for me, so rounded up.

Short stories that will keep you thinking.
By Anam Cara
Actually, the stories were quite entertaining The stories were written by a variety of authors and the the compiler of the stories thoughtfully provided information about each author which certainly added to the enjoyment. I did find one story down right scary, but perhaps because that was partly because I was reading that one late at night. Most of the stories would fit into the "cozy" category.

My favorite was Murder at the Towers which I found delightfully written and with a twist that I could NEVER have imagined. E. V. Knox had amusing names for the characters like "Police-Inspector Blowhard." The writing for this one had me longing for more. It is set in a house party in a grand home in England (of course - the book is titled "Murder at the Manor") The first sentence is one of the best opening lines I have ever read.
Mr. Ponderby-Wilkins was a man so rich, so ugly, so cross, and so old, that even the stupidest reader could not expect him to survive any longer than Chapter 1." Our detective is introduced and was welcomed by all the guests. "Many of them had already begun to feel that a house-party without a detective in it must be regarded as a literary failure."

My problem was not with the stories or the writing, but with the format. I read this on my kindle; it was the first time I had ever read short stories in e-format. I found this disconcerting. I couldn't be certain while reading how much longer a story was; I couldn't just flip a few pages easily and see how much more 'til the end. The stories were of varying length so I had no idea. My kindle only would show the % until the end of the book. I wasn't even certain just how many stories were included in this anthology.

While I highly recommend the book, I would advise anyone who wants to read it, to buy the traditional bound copy.

I received an advance copy of this book for my honest review.

The Norton Anthology of World Literature, Package 1 (Volumes A, B, C): Beginnings to 1650From W W Norton & Company

Nine years ago, W. W. Norton changed the way world literature is taught by introducing The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces, Expanded Edition.

Leading the field once again, Norton is proud to publish the anthology for the new century, The Norton Anthology of World Literature, Second Edition. Now published in six paperback volumes (packaged in two attractive slipcases), the new anthology boasts slimmer volumes, thicker paper, a bolder typeface, and dozens of newly included or newly translated works from around the world.

The Norton Anthology of World Literature represents continuity as well as change. Like its predecessor, the anthology is a compact library of world literature, offering an astounding forty-three complete longer works, more than fifty prose works, over one hundred lyric poems, and twenty-three plays. More portable, more suitable for period courses, more pleasant to read, and more attuned to current teaching and research trends, The Norton Anthology of World Literature remains the most authoritative, comprehensive, and teachable anthology for the world literature survey.

Best of Its Kind
By Bill R. Moore
Norton's literary anthologies have long been the standard in every genre, and its World Literature collection is no exception. Their most ambitious offering, it proposes to cover no less than a representative sampling of the world's best and most important literature from the earliest writings to today. This set contains the first three volumes - half the total -, going up to 1650 C. E. The range of material is truly incredible in terms of both time and place. The best way to make the sheer vastness clear is to list the sections: The Invention of Writing and the Earliest Literatures (Gilgamesh, Ancient Egyptian Poetry, The Old Testament), Ancient Greece and the Formation of the Western Mind, Poetry and Thought in Early China, India's Heroic Age, The Roman Empire, From Roman Empire to Christian Europe, India's Classical Age, China's "Middle Period," The Rise of Islam and Islamic Literature, The Formation of a Western Literature, The Golden Age of Japanese Culture, Mystical Poetry of India, Africa: The Mali Epic of Son-Jara, The Renaissance in Europe, and Native America and Europe in the New World. This truly mind-boggling selection stretches over three thousand pages including dozens and dozens of pieces. The nature of anthologies of course favors poems and short prose, but a surprising number of longer works are here in full: The Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Odyssey, Aeschylus' Agamemnon and The Eumenides, Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Antigone, Euripides' Medea, Aristophanes' Lysistrata, Kalidasa's Sakuntala and the Ring of Recollection, Beowulf, Dante's Inferno, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Everyman, Erasmus' The Praise of Folly, Lope de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, and Shakespeare's Hamlet and Othello. The collection would be well worth buying for these alone; one would be very hard-pressed to get them separately for less than the anthology costs - not to mention the numerous shorter works given in full and many longer ones in excerpt. It is particularly noteworthy for including many Asian - not to mention Native American and African - works virtually ignored in such collections until very recently while still giving a thorough overview of European classics.

Norton's anthologies are also notable for extensive supplemental material. Each author and work is introduced with several pages of biography, background, initial critical analysis, and further reading suggestions for both text and criticism. Individual sections also have Introductions with similar general information plus a timeline and map, and there is an overall Preface. In addition, there are substantial footnotes and glosses plus a closing essay on translation and an index. This helps make the works, all of which are remote in time and many of which are remote in culture and other ways, much more accessible. Many readers will appreciate this, especially as the editors are careful to give what is needed for basic understanding without forcing interpretations, while those who do not can easily skip them. The anthology is designed primarily as a text for college literature survey courses but is also ideal for general readers wanting to learn about world literature - not only the texts themselves but a substantial amount of secondary material.

This brings up the central point that the collection is after all a primer. Purists and the dedicated may scoff at some of its attributes. World literature being so large, it is of course impossible for any collection to be even remotely comprehensive, and one can easily find important works or personal favorites that are excluded. However, there is no denying the awe-inspiring scope of what is here, including nearly everything that absolutely had to be. The excerpts can also be frustrating, especially as summaries and notes have frequent spoilers, though it is clearly better for the works in question to be here in part than not at all. As most of the pieces are translated, some will also take issue with the translations used. The editors wisely chose those the most accessible, but some will prefer more literary versions; for example, a prose Gilgamesh translation is used rather than a more artistic verse one. On the whole, though, the choices are hard to fault. Older translations are also updated to conform with current spelling, punctuation, etc; even English writers like Chaucer and Milton are dealt with thus. Purists will not like this, but nearly everyone interested in such a collection will appreciate it.

All told, anyone wanting a world literature collection excellent in all respects can do no better. Separately buying all the works given here would cost many times the price of the collection; the value is near-unbelievable. Even reading regularly, it will take at least several months to finish - probably at least the better part of a year. More importantly, this is the kind of collection one can keep for a lifetime; it provides years of re-reading and reference. One can hardly even conceive of a better deal; such quantity and diversity in one collection is truly amazing. Anyone who enjoys the first three volumes is of course highly encouraged to go on to the next three as well as other Norton anthologies. As for how to buy them, anyone wanting half the set or the whole will be better off getting the two three-volume sets; it is cheaper and more convenient. Those wanting only one or a few volumes can purchase individually, but the quality is so high that they will almost certainly want them all anyway, so the sets are really the way to go. You will not be disappointed.

Norton Anthology of World Lit. pckg 1
By Amazon Customer
This package is a 3 volume set that begins with the story of Gilgamesh and ends with Popol Vuh. Please keep in mind that some of the stories contained within the binding of these 3 volumes are not full and complete but rather a sampling of the story. This was a required source for my World Literature class, which I was apprehensive about taking (I am not an avid reader), but with our reading selection from this 3 volume set, the class has been interesting and surprisingly fun. School or leisure, this set is worth the small investment.

I ordered The Norton's Anthology of World Literature volumes A-C, however only received volume C. The sender did return my money, however, I requested and would have preferred getting the other 2 volumes for which I had a much greater need for at the time.

Review
"As a martial arts instructor it is great having a resource that helps instructors and students understand the correlation between techniques in a form and how they can be used with a grappling application." —James Bailey. 8th Degree TaeKwonDo Grand Master and Co-founder of Tiger Rock Martial Arts International

"Interpretation of movement is at the heart of all pattern (kata) training and Taekwondo Grappling Techniques presents an insightful interpretation of the movements included in Taekwondo. The influences and origins of various styles are all intertwined and the techniques often have several interpretations. I found the interpretations in Taekwondo Grappling Techniques to be both informative and thought provoking." —Danny Dring, 8th Degree Taekwondo, Owner and Founder of Living Defense Martial Arts

"I found the book to be both informative as well as instructional. So little was known or taught to many of us as students ourselves in our generation about the true meanings of the moves within the patterns. The fact that we can now disect these meanings is a testiment to both the dedication and to the pursuit of excellence in Taekwondo that Mr. Steve Snyder and Dr. Tony Kemerly have demonstrated. I would highly recommend this book to any Taekwondo instructor or student." —George Strickland, Co-founder TaeKwonDo United Association

A wonderful book on form/pattern applications amd more
By Amazon Customer
Kemerly and Snyder have put together a great book that examines how basic strikes, kicks, blocks, and movement sets from the Chang-Hon forms can be used in grappling based situations. The large full-color pictures and verbose descriptions make it easy for student and instructor alike to understand and practice the skills presented. The book is similar in vein with Staurt Anslow's "Chang Hon Taekwon-Do Hae Sul" and Simon John O'neill's "The Taegeuk Cipher" in that it covers self defense applications of the forms, in this case, the aforementioned Chang-Hon patterns taught in ITF based schools. The book also includes a DVD that shows videos of some of the content in the book. The DVD is short, but well done (not excellent, but still very good), with good lighting, clean technique, and easy to hear and understand explanations of what is being shown. The book itself is worth the money, and having the DVD with it is a great bonus, like finding a $20 bill in your coat pocket out of the blue.
Now, I will say that a few of the skills/applications shown in the book are, in my opinion, a bit of a stretch or there are better ways to pull off some of what they are showing, but only a few. There is nothing wrong with what they show per say, only perhaps a better way to perform them, but then again, this is why different styles exist and nothing says that you cannot perform things your way.
I will include some of my qualifications to review the book and make the judgments that I have, though I welcome different view points. I hold a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do (Chang Hon based) and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do. Additionally I have 12 years of experience in high school/collegiate style wrestling, hold Kyu Rank in Japanese Jujutsu and Yoshinkan Aikido, and have done a little bit of cross training in Hapkido, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Judo, to name a few. I own and operate a martial arts school on the east coast of the United States. I have a Bachelor's degree, am pursuing a Master's Degree (having nothing to do with martial arts, but I have been involved in upper academic work).
In conclusion, while I could hope at times for a little more content (plenty there, but I always enjoy more), it was well worth the money for the few new ways of looking at some of the forms & basics and to see some of what I have been teaching validated by others. Beginners and more experienced Tae Kwon Do practitioners can find something new, whether it be a move, or just a new way of looking at what they have been practicing for years. Even those from other striking styles can pick up some new skills based on similarities between Tae Kwon Do and other striking styles. Hope this has been helpful to you and I firmly encourage martial artists to pick up this book.

Very Well Done Guide to Grappling/Joint Techniques in Tae Kwon Do
By Shawn Kovacich
I have to say that I was quite pleasantly surprised to see this book in our local big chain bookstore earlier today. So much so in fact that I actually read through the vast majority of the book while still in the store.

One of the first things to really strike me about the authors and this book, was the blatant honesty that they used when describing their martial art of Tae Kwon Do and the various myths and outright lies that exist concerning this Korean martial art. Their honest reminded me of another very honest and informative book on Tae Kwon Do entitled; A Killing Art: The Untold History of Tae Kwon Do, which is also a book that I highly recommend that every Tae Kwon Do practitioner should read.

The basic premise of this book is the authors detailed analysis of the various different striking and blocking techniques in Tae Kwon Do and there patterns that can actually be used as grappling or joint techniques when you understand there true motives. In other words, just because it looks like a block or a strike doesn't necessarily mean that it can not also be used as something else, like say an armbar, wrist lock, etc.

Some of the techniques they demonstrate in this book I have seen before and a lot of them have some merit, although not every technique. There were a few that I really questioned the validity and practicality of, while others seemed fairly sensible.

All of the techniques are shown in very clear and fairly detailed color photographs, although I must admit that I would have liked to have seen a bit more detailed text describing each technique. However, if you are already familiar with the techniques shown, then the text provided should be adequate enough for you to understand what the authors are trying to explain to you.

A Whole New Perspective
By James R. DeCarli
I do not practice mixed martial arts, so I can't really attest to how well someone will hone their "competitive edge for mixed martial arts" but I found the book useful nonetheless for my studies of taekwon-do. I bought the book to get a better understanding of common taekwon-do techniques as well as how they may be used in self defense. Also, I bought this book to gain a deeper understanding of applications for taekwon-do patterns. I am glad that "Taekwondo Grappling Techniques" is now in my library.

The authors begin with a short introductory chapter that is worth a read. The section "How to Use This Book" challenges you think about the composition of each patterns such as "why a palm strike rather than a fist attack?" and "why all the different chambering for hand techniques?" The authors continue with a chapter on blocking techniques and a chapter on strikes and kicks, covering nearly three dozen individual techniques. As with any good martial arts instructor, the authors then built upon these individual techniques by using them in combinations. This is done by examining sequences of techniques in each of the first twelve ITF patterns (Chon-ji through Ge-Baek). For example, how can you use the high punch, double knifehand block, high punch combination found in Dan Gun to execute a choking technique or how perform a takedown using the hook blocks and reverse punch in Yul-Gok. Seeing how these familiar patterns may be used for locks, breaks, takedowns, and throws gives you a whole new perspective.

The DVD is good supplement to the book. It contains the videos of about a dozen basic techniques as well as a technique from each of the twelve patterns. My only suggestion is that they illustrate more of the book in the DVD.

Review

"This book is beautifully presented and easy to read. It contains everything the medical student and GP need to know about the subject." Univadis, review 145, February 2008 "This book is not only useful to students but also for urologists in training. Senior urologists will find such a handbook a handy tool in their practice or teaching." Prof.Dr. Paul Meria, European Urology Today, October/November 2008

"One cannot help but be impressed with the general layout of this book and clearly much thought has gone into it. The colour images are really first class, the diagrams and tables are clear and there are some classic radiographs… A book that’s suitable for medical students, GPs and urology specialist nurses and at a price that won’t break the bank" Univadis Review, May 2009

''The book’s extensive use of images, diagrams and tables allows it to convey an impressive amount of information in an easily accessible form. The book’s concise approach and easy referencing make it an excellent text for a quick look on the ward and would be a worthwhile addition to a university or departmental library.''

The Secret Teachings of the Tao Te Ching, by Mantak Chia, Tao Huang

Reveals techniques for achieving spiritual immortality through an in-depth exploration of Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching

• Includes practices and meditations for living in harmony with the Tao (universal essence) and Te (kind action)

• Reveals the integration of heavenly and human power in the mystic field within us

• Presents Tao Huang's English translation of the Tao Te Ching from the original Chinese Mawangdui text unearthed in 1973

For over 2,500 years the words of the Tao Te Ching, the primary scripture of Laoism and Taoism, have been regarded as among the greatest treasures of the world. Lao-tzu, whose name means “the ancient child,” wrote these brief but essential verses that have both confounded and conferred blessings on humankind. Now Taoist masters Mantak Chia and Tao Huang guide readers through the origins of this philosophy, the meaning behind its 5,000 pictographs, and the way of living that generations have followed.

While the text of the Tao Te Ching has been passed down in literary form for generations, the essence of the text can be understood only through heart awakening--a true integration of body and mind--made possible with the insights and exercises in this book. The authors analyze Lao-tzu's teachings, line by line, and offer meditations, interpretations, and practical illustrations that clarify the true meaning and purpose of this classic text.

Excellent spiritual advice for aspirants
By Cairy
This book is an excellent introduction to the spiritual and energetic principles of Taoism as well as guide to practice transformation through the Tao. It also works very well as a spiritual inspiration and guide to those already practicing the Tao or inner Alchemy in any tradition.

The Tao Te Ching has been re-translated by the two Taoist masters and is included in entirity in the book (in the rear). However, the authors have re-organzied the passages so that like passages are included together and the authors comment on the application of the text to spirituality. The books covers a number of basic concepts and teachings regarding what the Tao is, viewpoint on chi cultivation, I-ching, how to practice, live, and works with thoughts/emotions in harmony with the Tao. There are many concepts in here cnetral to the Tao view of cosmology, nature, and inner alchemy.

There are also numerous meditation and alchemical transformative practices in the book including: microcosmic orbit (with the feet & legs), 6 healing sounds, Frolics of the 5 animals, Golden Elixir (saliva) alchemy, Using five colors for healing, energy circulation to unite the cauldrons (tan tiens), and opening the Belt channels. Other meditations include attuning to your inner voice, perenium breathing, and third-eye breathing, and how to nurture humility.

I bought this book as a supplement to the basic Taoist practices I am working on and have found it to be invaluable in imparting some basic view of the Tao for my life. Highly recommended!

Great!
By @d!m00L@#
This book is an excellent introduction to the practice of daoist internal alchemy. It offers some basic practices that anyone can utilize to help balance their energies and emotions.

This small manual provides an excellent starting point to the study of internal alchemy, hopefully this will lead the student to wish to learn directly from a good practitioner of the system and learn more advanced and powerful techniques. Mantak Chia is known as the world's foremost expert on this system of spiritual development, any student of any skill level or path could engage in an reap the benefits of these powerful techniques.

Highly recommended.
