BY THE SAME AUTHOR: Color Star Johannes has long been considered the definitive color theorist of the twentieth century. His books on color theory and application are standards throughout the world. Now his Color Star helps designers explore a myriad of harmonious colors. The Star consists of eight stencil like disks that can be placed over Itten's color wheel. Designers and artists can selectively examine the relationships of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors by using this unique system. Cool and warm values, complementary colors, and different hues and intensities can all be compared individually, as the designer uses the stencils to see the stencils to see only the wanted colors while masking the rest of the wheel. The Color Star is a useful and innovative tool for everyone who works with color, including students graphic designers, industrial designers, advertising designers, artists, illustrators, color theorists, interior designers, and architects.

Design and Forum

This is the most complete document of one of the landmarks of modern education in art-the famous Basic Course at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. Itten was the teacher who organized it at the invitation of Walter Gropius. First published in 1963 when Itten was still alive, the book has been revised and updated by Itten's widow, Anneliese Itten and includes new material from the basic course at the Bauhaus, as well as visual examples and descriptions of the refinements made by Itten in later courses in Berlin (1926-1932), Krefeld (1932-1938), and Zurich (1938-1960). The basic course at the Bauhaus was designed as a trial to judge students with varying education, to help them in their choice of a career in the arts, Each of the over 200 illustrations reproduced is described in detail to help the reader understand the purpose of art teaching. The student's original works include studies if nature, pure forms and abstractions, three-dimensional work, and projects in the applied arts. The book has universal appeal for a basic course as a means for individual creative growth and it can be used today by students and art teachers as a foundation for their own basic courses.

The Art of Color Nearly 160 full-color charts, diagrams, and paintings illustrates this first publication of the color theories of the famous Bauhaus teacher and painter. Both the physical and emotional nature of color is studies. The seven basic color contrasts are examined in detail, and clarified with 28 full-color reproductions of painting masterpieces, from the stained-glass art of Chartres to the glowing canvasses of Picasso and Klee. The psychological, symbolic, and intellectual effects of color are explored in detail. Included also are an exposition of compositional order, a discussion of color effects in nature, and valuable demonstrations of techniques for bringing two or more colors harmoniously together.

Difficult to read on account of vagueness

Itten's book on color is worth careful study, but the book suffers from vagueness and requires considerable artistic and aesthetic experience to appreciate--not to mention patience. The Elements of Color should be read after Itten's Design and Form: The Basic Course at the Bauhaus and Later, which describes the propaedeutic course Itten taught at the Bauhaus. Itten's introduction in that text offers context that, to this reader, was missing from The Elements of Color.

Kindle edition has Black and white images?!

I've seen printed versions of this book and I've been thinking about getting it for a while. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the kindle version would be in black and white. When discussong color and showing diagrams showing the actual colors really helps. I am soo soo disappointed with this purchase. The books content itself is amazing but I'm going to rethink ordering ebooks from amazon in the future.

An Art student's MUST to study and learn Color Theory. .. . was required for color theory classes at university in the 80's, and is still the best book on it... no filler, gets right to the beef of color and contrasts. Hopefully, the publisher (John Wiley & Sons, New York) will re-print it (loss to students if they don't), or at least do an e-book edition. There are scalpers out there - don't go crazy to buy it ($25 to $35.00 is fair).

The Real Hitchhiker's Guide

I cannot believe the amount of time and attention to detail that went into this book. Perusing these pages, you will learn how to do just about everything...at least, everything that's truly useful when the chips are down. That's about the only way that I can describe the scope of this tome.
Wilderness survival techniques, aromatherapy, acupressure, meditation techniques, exercise programs, knot tying, and even jokes and magic tricks are just a few of the subjects described and amusingly and richly illustrated within these pages. The whole book adheres to an "ancient wisdom of the Orient" theme, and it's hard to tell whether "Zeek" (the author/illustrator) takes this seriously or not. It doesn't really matter, though, as the advice given is generally very useful. Some fringe topics are covered (the existence of "chi", enemas, fasting, etc.) but at least the author concedes that with health matters, it's best to seek the advice of professionals.
Keeping with the Asian wisdom theme, there is a strong focus in this book on the martial arts. As a martial artist myself, I appreciated this focus and hope that it will inspire readers to investigate a style or two with a qualified instructor. But one need not be a karateka to draw more than enough inspiration and information from these pages, on a wide variety of topics.
This fascinating, unusual book is jam-packed with detailed illustrations on every page. Put a copy on your coffee table or in the bathroom, and your guests are sure to take a genuine gem of wisdom home with them, if they don't take the whole book.

Imagine, if you will, that you are in the company of a man who has travelled the world, seen many things that are NOT in the guidebooks, been in the company of many people both great and small, taken a lot of hard knocks, learned much to prevent repeating any mistakes, and lived to tell about it.
This is the book he wrote.
Equal parts Boy Scout Handbook, Whole Earth Catalogue and "Junior Woodchuck Guidebook" (the impossably complete reference book that Donald Duck's nephews carried with them), with painstakingly detailed illustrations on each and every page, tinted with Oriental wisdom.
Just a sampling of the contents (with randomly chosen pages): "Asian secrets of walking stick combat", "A traveler's guide to self-hypnosis", "Rapid reference accupressure treatments", "Emergency entertainment for bored, whining or fighting kids", "Effective beauty treatments with simple natural ingredients", "How to survive disaster situations", "How to condition for martial art strikes", "Non-violent child control", "Simple and healthy vegetarian recipes", "How to execute classic Kung Fu moves".
My friend, this is the one! From boating emergencies to avoiding a fight, from preventing food poisoning to physical fitness information, from natural therapies to preventing bedwetting, from Laws of the Sea to preventing skin problems, from tying knots to yoga postures....
I cannot say enough about this book. Buy it. Better yet, buy two and hide one copy. Someone is bound to "borrow" this from you.

Unique indeed, but usefull...

This book surprised me with its vast scope and humorous wit. This book is sort of like an encyclopedia of general, and not so general, knowledge. It has everything from the great importance of clear finger nail polish, general navigation, nuclear radiation treatment, tips about sex, how to fish, health (diet, vitamins, etc.) and on it goes. It is illustrated by the author, who in his own right is an enigma though a very intriguing man. This book has it all in a neat little package. This is not a sit-down-and-read kind of book, but one that should be used for reference. I pick a certain page and try to learn that particular entry for that day. It can broaden your general knowledge greatly.

About the Author
Chong Yagyong (1762–1863), who wrote under the pen name Tasan, was one of Korea’s greatest Confucian scholars. Award-winning writer and scholar Choi Byonghyon has devoted himself to the English translation of Korean classics over the last two decades, and his translation of The Book of Corrections: Reflections on the National Crisis on the Japanese Invasion of Korea 1592-1597 won the translation award from Korea Literature Translation Institute. He is currently working on a dictionary for the English translation of Korean classics.

In the preface to this book, the authors point out that for thousands of years humans have used psychoactive substances to modify their perceptions and mood. Indeed, some observers believe that such behavior may be a defining characteristic of the human condition. In contrast to the millennial history of drug taking, the era of scientific psychopharmacology is very short; perhaps its proper beginning can be dated to the middle of the 20th century. Since then, the rate of accrual of new knowledge in the field has increased enormously. (Figure) The authors aim to produce an introductory textbook on psychopharmacology and to convey some of the excitement that they find in this discipline. They attempt to create an integrated work, linking the basic principles of pharmacology, neurophysiology, and related neuroscience; the key features of the neurotransmitter systems; and the theories and mechanisms of related illnesses, including substance abuse and major psychiatric disorders. The authors have succeeded in reaching all these goals. They cover the important topics with great clarity, and the reader will find all the subjects accessible. "Hooks" at the beginning of each chapter -- such as an image of the title page of Uber Coca, Sigmund Freud's tribute to the virtues of cocaine -- catch the interest of the reader; the authors, while not compromising the thoroughness of their scientific explanations, have greatly enhanced the book's readability with this technique. A particular delight is that the book is sumptuously illustrated -- many of the illustrations are eye-catching and attention-grabbing. As with any first edition, there are one or two minor flaws in the writing and minor errors in the references. Available to qualified adopters of this textbook are special supplements -- a resource CD for instructors, which contains all the figures, illustrations, photographs, and tables from the book, as well as a test bank consisting of 50 questions per chapter. About the Author
Jerrold S. Meyer is Professor of Psychology and Director of the interdepartmental Neuroscience and Behavior Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He did his graduate work under Dr. Robert Bowman at the University of Wisconsin, receiving his Ph.D. in 1974, and he was a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Bruce McEwen at Rockefeller University and with Dr. William Boggan at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is the author or coauthor of over 75 articles and chapters in the fields of neuropharmacology and neuroendocrinology, and coauthored Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology (1997) with Robert Feldman and Linda Quenzer. Dr. Meyer is a past President of the Neurobehavioral Teratology Society, an international society devoted to the study of neurotoxicant effects on brain and behavioral development. His current research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on the neurotoxic and behavioral effects of MDMA ("Ecstasy"), and the neurochemical and neuroendocrine correlates of self-injurious behavior. Linda F. Quenzer is Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Hartford. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1974 with Dr. Robert S. Feldman and she was an NIMH postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Preclinical Pharmacology with Dr. Norton Neff. During her appointment in the Departments of Pharmacology and Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut Medical School, she received a Career Development Award from the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Foundation. Dr. Quenzer has extensive teaching experience in the areas of psychobiology and neuropsychopharmacology at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Her previous collaborations with Sinauer Associates include Fundamentals of Neuropsychopharmacology (1984, with Robert Feldman) and Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology (1997, with Robert Feldman and Jerrold Meyer). Her current interests concern the role of the HPA axis, hippocampal atrophy, and neurogenesis in psychiatric disorders.

Perhaps the best psychopharmacology text available

I used the more advanced version of this text (Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology) for a course in neuropharmacology in graduate school. This an excellent version of that text aimed at the undergraduate level--like the longer version, this text is extremely well written, clear, concise, and filled with illustrations that really "illustrate" the points made in the text. I can't recommend this text more highly for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in psychopharmacology.

�In 1977 the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, instituted a written examination as one of the first major requirements toward the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. Its purpose was to determine whether first-year students in the Ph.D. program had successfully mastered basic mathematics in order to continue in the program with the likelihood of success. Since its inception, the exam has become a major hurdle to overcome in the pursuit of the degree. The purpose of this book is to publicize the material and aid in the preparation for the examination during the undergraduate years. The book is a compilation of over 1,250 problems which have appeared on the preliminary exams in Berkeley over the last twenty-five years. It is an invaluable source of problems and solutions for every mathematics student who plans to enter a Ph.D. program. Students who work through this book will develop problem-solving skills in areas such as real analysis, multivariable calculus, differential equations, metric spaces, complex analysis, algebra, and linear algebra. The problems are organized by subject and ordered in an increasing level of difficulty. Tags with the exact exam year provide the opportunity to rehearse complete examinations. The appendix includes instructions on accessing electronic versions of the exams as well as a syllabus and statistics of passing scores.

This new edition has been updated with the most recent exams, including exams given during the Fall 2003 semester. There are numerous new problems and solutions which were not included in previous editions.

A real pearl!

This book is a rare peak inside one of the best Ph.D. programs in Mathematics in the world. It allows you to try out and test yourself on the same problems that the best young and aspiring mathematicians are testing themselves.
The problems are neatly arranged by subject and in increasing level of difficulty, and the solutions, are not only beautifully
written, but somewhat surprising and unexpected for a seasoned student. I pull mine out of the shelf on the rainy days and try a few more, and when I get one, I really savour it!

Excellent Problem Book

The problems in this book are excellent, they are both entertaining and instructive. I thought I knew calculus, linear algebra, and all of the other typical undergraduate subjects very well, until I purchased this book. After working several problems, mostly without success, I realized that there is a big difference between knowing theorems and knowing how to use them. Since then I have worked these problems daily to improve my "working knowledge," and it has made me a much better mathematician. Learning the definitions and theorems is just the first stage of mathematical knowledge. In this form your knowledge is simply something stored in memory. In the second stage, you must turn it into something more like "software," something that is an active part of your thinking. The only way to do this is by solving problems, and for undergraduate mathematics, this is probably the best book of problems you will find. Highly recommended.

Excellent Problems!

These are great problems for those who would like to review undergraduate mathematics or those who would like to try some challenging problems. They are not as difficult as the problems on the Putnam competitions or those in the Math Monthly , but many require a bit of thought and some ingenuity. Some of the problems are routine, and if you don't want to review the basics, you can skip those and just try the more difficult ones. Even experienced problem solvers will have fun with some of these! Anyone who teaches undergraduate mathematics should have this collection. Highly recommended.

Loved it until the very end

Let me start off by saying that I read both the first book of the series, The Forest of Adventures, and this book within two days. I was hooked from the start and drawn into the magical world that the author created. I thought the characters were very well developed and relatable. I thought the idea of the series was very original and I was glad that I had found something new in this genre.
That said, I liked the The Forest of Adventure much better than Immortal Beloved. I liked imagining the world of The Realm and enjoyed the characters that were found there. I liked how The Forest of Adventures ended and was eager to read Immortal Beloved, so much so I started on it the next morning.
I finished Immortal Beloved within hours. I was extremely disappointed with the ending. I had figured that with the Arthurian theme, the Egyptian theme, and the Immortal theme, there was more than enough storyline to carry the book series and make it a great read. Why the author decided to throw in ANOTHER PARANORMAL THEME is beyond me. I chose to read these books because it was something fresh and new. But now its become the same old VAMPIRE YA read, and in my opinion, there isn't much left to be discovered about vampires.
More than likely I will read the last book of the trilogy when it becomes available. Unfinished stories have a tendacy to nag at my brain until they are resolved. I have my fingers crossed that the author is able to create something new and exciting with the played out vampire theme. So, would I recommend this book? Yes, but only if you're still enthralled by tales of vampires and their star-crossed love, because thats what this trilogy has become.

And the plot thickens...

Life wasn't meant to be easy but surely Mina deserved a break, first off she fell madly in love with Blake a real life knight and was introduced to a world only known in fairy tales and stories of King Arthur. Then the evil witch Morgan turned up and it all went to hell literally. Now Mina must embark on a journey to save Blake from his fate with her most trusted friends and even if they somehow succeed in getting to him in time, it will only be a Pyrrhic victory. I really enjoyed this book and the references to Egyptian gods and customs peppered throughout. Whilst the formula is by no means original, the story is diverse enough that there are a few twists and turns with an unforeseen ending. It sets the reader up nicely for the last book in the trilogy which is next on my list.

She feels as if her heart has been torn from her body.

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Mina is lost in her own little world after losing her beloved Blake. She feels as if her heart has been torn from her body. But she struggles to regain her life without him while at the same time she is hurting from the pain that she knows that she must have caused Sam when their relationship ended so abruptly well to Sam that is how it must have felt.

But later Mina finds out that there is a way to save Blake. Sam, Mina and Delta has to go to Egypt on a quest to save him. But when they get their they find out only Mina can save Blake. Mina is one brave, strong girl to go through what she has to to save her one true love. The love Mina feels for Blake is very strong to do what she does to save him. Can you image loving someone that much? I know we all believe that we love our spouses or partners that much. I am one of those people who believes that I would do anything for my husband. But how can we ever know what we would do unless we have walked in someone else's shoes. And there is no way to walk in someone else's shoes because even though our stories may be similar they can never be the same. So therefore we can never know what someone else is going through or how they feel.

I love the way Sam goes on with his life after Mina ends their relationship. Sam and Delta have their own relationship. They love each other in their own way and really enjoy being together. Sam is such a nice guy in that he never holds it against Blake for taking the love of his life from him. Blake and Sam somehow put aside their differences and become friends. They probably do this for Mina because they both care so much for her.

I would like to have known more about Delta and her life. Who was she really? Who were her parents? Where did she live? What kind of life did she have? What made her the person that she is?

I loved how Mina loved Blake so much that she would and did put her life in danger to save him. But at the same time she still cared and loved Sam but in a different way. Mina was always thinking and putting someone else's feelings before her own.
