As early as 1943 it became apparent that supersonic flight might be an achievable goal, but not for the propeller-driven aircraft of the day. Spurred on by secret intelligence of a German supersonic long-range bomber project, work began on a British secret research aircraft that would potentially be the first manned aircraft to break through the sound barrier.

Although Miles Aircraft were best known for producing light aircraft and basic trainers, their design team quickly rose to the challenge with a range of ground breaking innovations in airframe design and construction, flying controls, advanced materials and pilot escape systems. The jet engine, designed by Frank Whittle, was also revolutionary, including an early form of 're-heat' technology.

By 1946 the project was about 90% complete with major technology and design features having been flight-tested on test-bed aircraft. Furthermore, on Government orders American personnel had been given complete access to the project, well before the Bell X-1 flew. What happened next has been mired in controversy, conspiracy theories and rumors to this day.

Exhaustively researched and illustrated through-out with rare and previously unpublished photographs, drawings and technical data, Miles M.52 finally tells the definitive factual story of the Miles M.52 project, gives an objective account of the controversy that grew around the aircraft, and describes the M.52's legacy to Britain's later supersonic aircraft.

About the Author
Tony Buttler was born in England in 1956 and completed his education at Prince Henry's Grammar School in Evesham. He joined High Duty Alloys in 1974 as a metallurgist and for nearly twenty years was involved in the testing of aluminium and titanium airframe and engine components for all of the world's major aircraft. It was during this period that his great interest in aviation began to blossom. After leaving HDA in 1993 Buttler earned his Masters Degree in Archives and Library Studies at Loughborough University, and became a freelance aviation historian specialising in the design and development of military aircraft. His special interest in one-off prototypes and research types made co-authoring X-Planes of Europe a particularly enjoyable task.

Well Written and Worth the Price!

An excellent documentation of the Miles M.52 supersonic research aircraft. The book explores Britain's overall program to reach and exceed Mach 1 and how this led to the selection of the Miles Company for such an aircraft. Initiated and pursued almost to completion, the program was cancelled after learning that the Germans were also pursuing such a program, but with swept wings. As Great Britain withdrew from the program, America continued on with it's straight-winged Bell XS-1 to break the sound barrier via rocket engine. Britain would have done so with a jet engine. Later a scaled down version, unmanned, of the Miles M.52 proved that the concept was sound and Britain could have done it, but of course it was too late by then.

Buy this book!

Yet another typical effort by Mr. Buttler which is to say superb. The bibliography does seem a little sparse. I can only assume what it lacked in breadth in made up for in depth, the overall tone of the books feels and reads like it was very highly researched. All the information is presented in the typical style of Mr. Buttler which I find very readable.
One area that still remains controversial is the M.52 data versus the Bell X-1. Mr. Buttler appears to be somewhat at odds with Captain Eric Brown on that issue. I suggest if your interests run deep enough to buy this book you also buy the recent book by Captain Brown for a differing opinion:

A must have book for the custom Lego builder!

I really like this book! I just got the book today and have already read it cover to cover. I’m very impressed overall and will be using it for reference when experimenting with my own custom Lego builds.

I’m biased towards this type of a Lego book because it’s oriented towards folks who like the Architecture and Creator sets and would like to create their own custom builds but could use some ideas on how to add those little details that really make your sets stand out.

About 1/3rd of the way through the book, you’ll see a custom Chili’s restaurant. I’d purchased those designs from the authors and built the set last summer. The set sits on a shelf at my house and gets as many compliments as my purchased Lego sets do. It’s nice to see their other creative work in this book.

This isn’t one of those books filled with giant, complex Lego builds that the average user never has the time or brick collection to build. I love those books too, but this book is one that I’ll have splayed open on the dining room table this weekend playing around with the step-by-step designs they’ve included in their book. at first I thought to be a waste. Then I looked at them step by step ...

As an AFOL, with two CFOL, this book was a must. As said before it covers modular buildings inside and outside. Techniques shown here also apply to other building genres. The directions, at first I thought to be a waste. Then I looked at them step by step and learned a few building tricks, so take it as you wish. For the price I am happy. If you have smaller kids (say under 10-12?) this is not a book they will like. There are plenty of other lego books for children.

A near perfect book for the adult Lego builder

First up, this is not a kids Lego book. This is a book targeted at Adult and teenage fans of Lego. Advanced builders, particularly those who love Legos "Modular Buildings" Creator Expert line, such as the Fire Brigade,mGrand Emporium and Palace Cinema. For those fans this is quite possibly the best Lego book ever written. The authors are some of the worlds best at creating new fan made unique and interesting Modular Style buildings. (Many of their design instructions including a great deal shown in pictures in the book are available for purchase from Brick City Depot) the book is overflowing with not just brilliantly detailed pictures, but also clearly illustrated tips, techniques and outright instructions. With the crowning delight being full instructions for four distinctive buildings including the wonderful pharmacy seen on the cover. The book offers some amazing easy to understand insight into looking at the buildings in the world around you, picking out key visual details, and converting them to Lego form such that they have a true sense of depth and life. Simply wonderful stuff.

Once again, this is not really a good book for the typical 7 year old Lego fan, but a teenager or adult will delight in it. For those in that older target audience this might be among the single best Lego books ever published. Every page will teach you something new.

Great Reference!!!

While studying for the PMP exam and as a practitioner, I found this tool to be straight-forward and useful for running projects. I would totally recommend it for exam prep and daily reference. I did however notice that one diagram was misaligned on page 222 and it covered part of the subsequent definition making it difficult to read. This slightly impacted my perceived quality of the product. All in all, it's worth the buy.
