Language in Late Capitalism: Pride and Profit (Routledge Critical Studies in Multilingualism)From Routledge

This book examines the ways in which our ideas about language and identity which used to be framed in national and political terms as a matter of rights and citizenship are increasingly recast in economic terms as a matter of added value. It argues that this discursive shift is connected to specific characteristics of the globalized new economy in what can be thought of as "late capitalism". Through ten ethnographic case studies, it demonstrates the complex ways in which older nationalist ideologies which invest language with value as a source of pride get bound up with newer neoliberal ideologies which invest language with value as a source of profit. The complex interaction between these modes of mobilizing linguistic resources challenges some of our ideas about globalization, hinting that we are in a period of intensification of modernity, in which the limits of the nation-State are stretched, but not (yet) undone. At the same time, this book argues, this intensification also calls into question modernist ways of looking at language and identity, requiring a more serious engagement with capitalism and how it constitutes symbolic (including linguistic) as well as material markets.

Review

"The authors effectively demonstrate the immensely complex nature of how 'pride' and 'profit' function, and also reveal how richly and powerfully pervasive these tropes are." ―Philip T. Duncan, LINGUIST List

"This book offers a rich collection of case studies looking at how perceptions of, and approaches to, languages have shifted in recent years. […] The strength of this framework is that it encourages the reader to think critically about language in social and political context." ―Franois Grin, Language Policy

"The book makes a significant contribution to understanding perspectives on language as we have moved from a primary language model with concerns for authenticity and language potential to a multilingual global society with ongoing concerns for authenticity and 'potential' monetized into value-added considerations."―Erik Aasland, Language in Society

From the Author
Dear reader,

The books of the Portland Storm series are hockey romances, but they go much deeper than the sport of hockey. These books touch on real-world issues such as rape, cancer, miscarriage, bullying, PTSD, grief, addiction, and many other similar subjects. If you have triggers, be aware that these books may very well contain material which could trigger you. That said, I endeavor to tackle these issues with sensitivity and compassion.

Additionally, many readers have requested that I put a TISSUE WARNING on the books in this series. I've received notes from readers about every single book in the series, in which readers tell me how the characters and the story brought them to tears. You may not need tissues for each book--the story line that resonates most for you may not be the one that others responded to in that way--but don't say I didn't warn you.

On that note, I have another warning for you: my hockey players curse like...well...hockey players. And there is a fair amount of sex in these books. If cursing and sex aren't your cup of tea, these books probably won't be, either.

Dropping Gloves (Portland Storm #7) by Catherine Gayle
By Diane Lynch
Katie Weber broke Jamie Babcock’s heart when she left for Hollywood to follow her dream. Now she is back in Portland, but Jamie is afraid to have his heart broken by her again.

I have been anxiously awaiting Katie and Babs’ story, and I was not disappointed. Heck I was crying only a few pages into the book. I’m pretty sure that was a record for me.

Babs had always been my favorite Portland Storm character. In my opinion, you cannot get much better than Jamie Babcock. He is such a great guy; you want to see the best for him. He was recently made team captain. Everyone seems to believe in him but himself. He has grown so much throughout this series. Plus, he is completely dedicated to Katie.

Katie is a great heroine. She is a cancer survivor who does not give up. She is a strong individual that goes after her dreams but recognizes when her priorities change.

I love the cats in this story. Blackbeard cracked me up. I have a cat that used to like to sit on my shoulder as a kitten, so I could relate. They made for some good comic relief.

I appreciated that Katie’s father, David Webber (Webs), was trying to play matchmaker. It was an interesting turn of events since Taking a Shot (book 2.5).

I thought it was great that a few characters from the new spin off series, Tulsa Thunderbirds, made an appearance in the story. I cannot wait to read that series.

Catherine Gayle did a phenomenal job with the plot. She covers real-life issues and delivers it in a believable manner. Dropping Gloves was a heartwarming story that made me feel just about every emotion possible. This is a book has made it to my favorites. A book I enjoyed so much I pretty sure I will reread multiple times.

AMAZING!
By Aly
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finally! Katie and Bab's story. I was so excited to get this and read it especially because I knew they would get their happy ending. I just wanted to know how. And again, Catherine Gayle does not disappoint. This book was a real tear jerker as many of her books are and I honestly can say it might be good to have tissues handy. I had a hard time putting Dropping Gloves down and I can tell you that this book is well worth the money!

One of my favorite things is how little updates are dropped here and there about different characters. Sometimes the news makes you sad because they characters are no longer with the Portland Storm but they are with the Tulsa Thunderbirds so that's a bit of hope as Catherine Gayle is writing this spin off series.

I also enjoy Catherine's writing style. It's one of the few times I enjoy first person perspective. I'm not sure if it's just the characters voices or what exactly it is but I do enjoy it.

There are happy moments to take away from the sad but Catherine Gayle makes sure that it is kept pretty realistic. Life isn't always happy and that is portrayed in this book. Although they do get their happy ending.

Dropping Gloves was well worth their wait and I cannot wait for more of the Portland Storm and also the Tulsa Thunderbirds!

Grab some coffee, you'll be up until you finish!
By Jac
If you have ever talked to me (in person or social media) you know that I adore Catherine Gayle! Her Portland Storm series is the one I recommend more than any other book, ever! And this book? It's one that I've anticipated since the very first time I picked up one of her books!

Jamie Babcock is the ideal book boyfriend in so many ways. And Katie Weber? Well, we've watched her grow up, starting with her high school crush on Babs! And now? She's back - in her own book. And let me tell you, from the very first page? Catherine Gayle will blow you away.

This is possibly one of the hardest books I've ever written a review for. It's one that you NEED to read, but it's also one that I can't tell you anything about because even the slightest hint will give away major SPOILERS!!! (And I'm anti-spoiler!)

So as I've said since my first Catherine Gayle review? She'll make you wish you could fall in love all over again, and she'll make you contemplate buying stock in Kleenex brand!

(I really wish this review could be longer. The feels are heavy, the emotions high and the swoons are many! So grab the tissues, your favorite eReader and a cup of coffee, because you'll be up all night!)

YOU HAVEN'T MET AUSTRALIA TILL YOU'VE MET THIS
By Charles Southwood
The old hero-story, thoughtfully retold, is always nourishing to read, but Wrightson offers us more: a first-class hero-cycle that is deeply, soul-quickeningly Australian. Wirrun is a young mid-20th-century Aboriginal man advancing to apotheosis (indeed) through encounter not only with the Aboriginal peoples of the "old south land" but also with the spirits who are themselves the land's oldest dreamings. Till I met them in Wrightson (a white Australian woman) these out-breathings of Australian presence were hidden to me. If bringing them forward in fiction like this involved a measure of cultural risk (I'm waiting on a ruling on that from the Aboriginal mate I bought this copy for), I, for one, can only be grateful. Profoundly respectful of the people whose lore constitutes so much of her material, she also loves them -- and shows it by enrolling Wirrun as a first-class member of that mighty, immemorial and global company that "climbs the rugged track to hero" on behalf of all of us, Australian or not, Aboriginal or not, man and woman alike.

The Complacent Class: The Self-Defeating Quest for the American Dream, by Tyler Cowen

"Tyler Cowen's blog, Marginal Revolution, is the first thing I read every morning. And his brilliant new book, The Complacent Class, has been on my nightstand after I devoured it in one sitting. I am at round-the-clock Cowen saturation right now."--Malcolm Gladwell

Since Alexis de Tocqueville, restlessness has been accepted as a signature American trait. Our willingness to move, take risks, and adapt to change have produced a dynamic economy and a tradition of innovation from Ben Franklin to Steve Jobs.

The problem, according to legendary blogger, economist and best selling author Tyler Cowen, is that Americans today have broken from this tradition―we’re working harder than ever to avoid change. We're moving residences less, marrying people more like ourselves and choosing our music and our mates based on algorithms that wall us off from anything that might be too new or too different. Match.com matches us in love. Spotify and Pandora match us in music. Facebook matches us to just about everything else.

Of course, this “matching culture” brings tremendous positives: music we like, partners who make us happy, neighbors who want the same things. We’re more comfortable. But, according to Cowen, there are significant collateral downsides attending this comfort, among them heightened inequality and segregation and decreased incentives to innovate and create.

The Complacent Class argues that this cannot go on forever. We are postponing change, due to our near-sightedness and extreme desire for comfort, but ultimately this will make change, when it comes, harder. The forces unleashed by the Great Stagnation will eventually lead to a major fiscal and budgetary crisis: impossibly expensive rentals for our most attractive cities, worsening of residential segregation, and a decline in our work ethic. The only way to avoid this difficult future is for Americans to force themselves out of their comfortable slumber―to embrace their restless tradition again.

"Tyler Cowen is an international treasure. Endlessly inventive and uniquely wide-ranging, he has produced a novel account of what ails us: undue complacency. No one but Cowen would ask, 'Why Americans stopped rioting and instead legalized marijuana.' He admires risk-taking, and he likes restlessness, and he thinks the United States needs lots more of both. Don't be complacent: Read this book!"--Cass R. Sunstein, Harvard University, and author of #Republic: Divided Democracy in the Age of Social Media

"A book that will undoubtedly stir discussion"--Kirkus

Lacking in focus
By Michael J. Edelman
America has become complacent, says Tyler Cowan. We don't move as much as we used to, we're not as upwardly mobile as we used to be, and we're pretty much okay with that. Except when we're not. Only 50% of 18 year old Millenials have a drivers' license, down from 83% a few decades ago. A frighteningly large percentage of young African American men are in prison. Cowen's narrative jumps around like this. We're comfortable in our complacency. There's a big resurgence of violent protest. There's a massive amount of uncounted productivity in the Internet, or maybe there isn't.

If we are complacent, as the title of this book suggests, why is this the case? Cowen tosses out a number of idea, and then around page 159 he narrows in on an answer to both the question of complacency and that of shrinking productivity: Government is consuming more and more of our resources in support of creating the complacent, risk-free life that an increasing number of Americans seem to want. Like many critics Cowen looks to de Tocqueville, who warned of the collapse of American democracy as the drive of immigrants and pioneers become diluted through generations. It's the immigrants, people who took risks to get here, who are driving innovation and growth now.

But all this is changing, Cowen says. A complacent society is not a stable society. What's coming is chaos and realignment, although why this is coming is a bit vague; "Or if you wish to put the point in the language of financial economics," says Cowen, " the possibility of cyclical patterns in history is right now the single biggest source of systemic, undiversifiable risk." In other words, change is coming because there are cycles that drive change. But cycles are effect, not cause. They're the sign of a pattern driven by some underlying dynamic, and Cowen is a bit vague on this.

Seriously, I'm not sure what to think about this book. Cowen throws around a lot of interesting facts and observations, but his narrative jumps around and lacks focus; I had to force myself to keep reading. There's not much that's terribly original or insightful. One newspaper reviewer states in their review that "Tyler Cowen may well turn out to be this decade's Thomas Friedman," which is certainly damning with faint praise, as Friedman is the master of breathlessly presenting the obvious.I came to this book with high expectations, based largely on his reputation, but I was disappointed by what I read.

Meandering book - Symptoms of a disease but no real discussion of a (policy) cure - disappointing
By Dan Sherman
I had hoped this would be a more interesting book that would define a problem and then point out some solutions. Cowan spends most of this 200 page books describing a complacent society, where there is less innovation, less risk taking, fewer people moving -- all signs of stagnation. There are lots of interesting tidbits and statistics here, but otherwise this is list of symptoms of conditions that lead to greater economic and social instability. There is a lot of anecdote here but it is not clear what the implication of this is - It seems to be we are facing an uncertain future that could be more chaotic - It is only at the very end of the book (next to last sentence) we get the message that future chaos may lead to our being less complacent, which could perhaps lead to a "perhaps ultimately beneficial process of social, economic, and legal transformation."

Although there are many interesting things in the book, it doesn't really lead to much of a conclusion or (what I would expect from a policy-oriented economist) discussion of policy options that will improve the problems - It is a bit like saying we will get old and die (with discussion of different diseases) without talking about steps that may improve the quality of our lives.

An Engaging Look at the Challenge of Change in 21st Century America
By James Strock
Tyler Cowen is a behavioral economist and essayist. He’s a frequent commentator, blogging at Marginal Revolution and for the New York Times. His perspective might be described as built on a libertarian foundation. Cowen sees markets at play—or being thwarted—in many settings.

A current running through Cowan’s work is how to master change in our new, twenty-first century world. The internet and other technological innovations are changing our lives and work for the better. But there are winners and losers. Cowan preaches adaptability and the need for continuous self-renewal.

‘The Complacent Class’ argues that the American people have become too enamored of security. This results in attempts to shelter ourselves from change. Or, perhaps, many among us are simply immobilized by the scale of the challenge.

Cowan combines the prerogatives of writer and economist to render judgment on declining social mobility. He reminds readers that attempts to forestall change will only make matters worse in a relentlessly fast-moving global economy. He compares attitudes of contemporary Americans with those of the Chinese. Where Americans are on defense, the Chinese are on offense.

The various chapters are well written in many cases usefully provocative. The author moves into so many areas of inquiry that any reader is bound to find herself agreeing and disagreeing on various items.

Quite reasonably, Cowan sees the coming years as a period of great change. Disruption in various areas may result in chaos. Unquestionably, dynamism will be a competitive necessity.

Cowan appears to believe that the American people are declining to embrace change, that we’re retreating from creativity and risk-taking. He acknowledges that government institutions may exacerbate this tendency. A fair question is the extent to which the risk-aversion he sees in the national culture might arise in response to government policies.

Surely our governance and culture are intertwined. Nonetheless, how one diagnoses the causes of the trend toward seeking security can be important to effectively correcting the problem.

Cowan is an engaging writer, a born teacher. No matter where one comes from on the issues, reading this work can be a rewarding experience.

Bountiful Goodness: Spiritual Meditations for a Deeper Union with Christ, by Thomas A'Kempis

The Imitation of Christ, also by Thomas Kempis, is the most famous and beloved Christian devotional ever written. The simplicity, piety and wisdom that readers have found in that classic will also be discovered in these new modern-English translations of A Little Garden of Roses and The Valley of Lilies. The aim of these works is to draw the reader to a closer union with Jesus. While Imitation sets forth the principles of discipleship, the two works in this volume offer more practical advice. They treat of the virtues needed to advance toward God.

The introduction to this volume includes a brief biographical sketch of Thomas Kempis, a fourteenth-century German monk, as well as some notes about the texts themselves. Like all meditation books, explains the introduction, this one is not to be read in one sitting, but pondered and prayed over slowly. "Pause and reflect on what [ Kempis] has to say," advises Fr. Joseph Tylenda, the translator, "and then join with him when he address the Lord and listen to Him when He speaks to you."

The Richness of Thomas A'Kempis' Words Drawing Us Closer To Christ.
By William Benedict T.O.C.
Anyone who loves the wisdom and richness of A'Kempis' famous "Imitation of Christ" will eat this book up! It's actually two of his lesser known books in one that follow the same powerful writing techniques that make "the Imitation" so rich. Short one and two page chapters of well-chosen words that speak directly to your heart and soul, profound wealth and knowledge in as few words as needed to make his point. The purpose of these writings is to bring you closer to God, or as the title truthfully implies "Spiritual meditations for a deeper union with Christ".
The introduction includes a brief yet very revealing overview and history of Thomas A'Kempis which I found very enlightening. I had no idea that so much was actually known of our fourteenth century German monk and author! A detailed and rather thorough history of his very fruitful life in just a few pages outlines his humble beginnings and entrance to the religious life, his ordination to the priesthood and on through his years as subprior and master of novices at his beloved monastery at Mount Saint Agnes where he wrote numerous devotional works (many directed to his novices) and books, as well as a great talent of the art of calligraphy for which he was assigned the task of copying the entire Bible for the community's use which took him fourteen years to complete! A very achieved and busy life of holiness, leaving us with many fruits of his work to meditate on for all future generations of those of us seeking a closer union with Christ, Thank You Thomas A'Kempis!

Its words keep coming back to me
By marigold
This is one of those books that is so rich that I find myself pondering a few sentences at a time over a few days. It would be tempting to read through it quickly because it's just so good, but instead I try to slow down and savor every few lines like a fine wine, and I find its words coming back to me again and again. This would be an excellent book for a retreat, and in fact that's where I discovered it-- two friends of mine each brought it on our last retreat together and both loved it. It is spiritually challenging without coming across as harsh; it really calls the reader to a closer union with Christ and a real desire for holiness. Highly recommend.

The Republic (Dover Thrift Editions), by Plato

Often ranked as the greatest of Plato's many remarkable writings, this celebrated philosophical work of the fourth century B.C. contemplates the elements of an ideal state, serving as the forerunner for such other classics of political thought as Cicero's De Republica, St. Augustine's City of God, and Thomas More's Utopia.
Written in the form of a dialog in which Socrates questions his students and fellow citizens, The Republic concerns itself chiefly with the question, "What is justice?" as well as Plato's theory of ideas and his conception of the philosopher's role in society. To explore the latter, he invents the allegory of the cave to illustrate his notion that ordinary men are like prisoners in a cave, observing only the shadows of things, while philosophers are those who venture outside the cave and see things as they really are, and whose task it is to return to the cave and tell the truth about what they have seen. This dynamic metaphor expresses at once the eternal conflict between the world of the senses (the cave) and the world of ideas (the world outside the cave), and the philosopher's role as mediator between the two.
High school and college students, as well as lovers of classical literature and philosophy, will welcome this handsome and inexpensive edition of an immortal work. It appears here in the fine translation by the English classicist Benjamin Jowett.

Reeve's new translation of Republic is the one to order for students. . . . Reeve draws on his thorough understanding of Plato's central work to provide an informed translation and properly brief supporting apparatus. A highlight is the concise, substantive Introduction that usefully encapsulates much of Reeve's own scholarship. --P.W. Wakefield, CHOICE

Taking full advantage of S. R. Slings' new Greek text of the Republic, Reeve has given us a translation both accurate and limpid. Loving attention to detail and deep familiarity with Plato's thought are evident on every page. Reeve's brilliant decision to cast the dialogue into direct speech produces a compelling impression of immediacy unmatched by other English translations currently available. --Lloyd P. Gerson, University of Toronto

Reeve's new translation can be highly recommended for its accurate and readable rendering of the original. . . . Those who read the Republic for the first time or for pleasure are sure to find this the most attractive and accessible translation currently available. --Naoko Yamagata, Journal of Classics Teaching

From the Back Cover

This celebrated philosophical work of the fourth century B.C. contemplates the elements of an ideal state, serving as the forerunner for such other classics of political thought as Cicero's De Republica, St.

Far from perfect, but still very good.
By Mr. S. Koller
This is a review of Christopher Rowe's new (2012) translation of Plato's masterpiece, the Republic (ISBN 0141442433). It is not a review of Plato's Republic as such, but solely of the merits and demerits of Rowe's translation.

I've never quite trusted Rowe as an exegete of Plato, as he's got too much of his own personal agenda intrude on his analysis. His joint book with Terry Penner on the Lysis, for instance, falls far short of giving us an unbiased, expansive, authorative commentary on the dialogue, especially when compared to more sober competitors like Michael Bordt's in the Göttingen Plato.

But as a translator, Rowe has proven time and again that he's singularly scrupulous, and attentive to technical detail where it matters. His renderings of Plato's Politicus (Statesman) and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, the latter published with Sarah Broadie, are probably the most authoritative around.

The same can be said for this newest of his translational efforts. In general, translations of the Republic usually err on the side of either trying too heavily to recreate the literary qualities of the original, or miss out so much of that detail because they try to be super exact on technicalities, that in either case the English falls far short of giving us a good understanding of Plato's Greek. The solution, so far, is to read Plato's Republic with (at least) two translations side by side. For instance, on the literal I've found Desmond Lee's quite good, and on the literary, Tom Griffith's stands out. Among the older ones, Paul Shorey's is particularly good on the literary side. Others, like Cornford, Waterfield, or Grube (even when revised under Reeve) can be safely avoided, for having the translators' hobby horses intrude on and mar the main text.

It's a bit hard to place Rowe on this spectrum from the literary to the literal, because he's consistently improved the situation on both sides of the spectrum - and I can think of no higher praise.

For one, Rowe has certainly outdone the rest of field by giving a more lively rendition of the flow of the dialogue, by paying more attention to the flow of the individual characters' speech. Although his translation follows the new Oxford Classical Text by Slings (2003), the punctuation is often Rowe's own and, I feel, often the superior choice. The dialogue becomes a lot more lively, and we get greater accuracy.

At the same time, Rowe's translation comes with seven hundred footnotes, and these are meticulously researched and show him on top of the current scholarly game. His translation is probably the first to unequivocally get the tricky lines in 596a correct. Mistranslations of these lines have encouraged generations of interpretors to saddle Plato with the view that one can posit a (Platonic) Form for each general term, no matter how gerrymandered. That rendering is simply false, and Rowe's note explains why. (He credits David Sedley with the point, and while Sedley's arguments are a welcome addition to the literature on this point, I wish Rowe had also mentioned Burnyeat's, on p. 298 with 298n.4 in Gail Fine's anthology 'Plato 2'.)

This increased accuracy also pervades a lot else in the translation, and I for one am grateful for it. Particularly the connecting particles, so important to the Greek flow of arguments, are given their due.

At times, however, Rowe falls short. A Platonic dialogue proceeds, usually, with (alternating) dominant speakers eliciting agreement or disagreement on particular points from their interlocutors. A great deal of text, therefore, is taken up by Plato expressing how the interlocutors express themselves on that point. Not just a 'yes' or 'no' - or the occasional, 'I don't understand, please repeat the question/point' - is in order. STRENGTH of (dis)agreement is just as important, for the respective next steps in an argument to go through. Plato's interlocutors signal their at times cautious dis/agreement on a point, with the occasional 'Perhaps...?' or the vehement 'In now way!'. The questions put to them, however, at times signal how strong the main speaker expects his dialogue partner to agree with him - with how many points just made, and how strongly. Thus at 479e5-6 we have the exchange 'ê ouch houtôs; - houtô.' Which means, 'Or is it not in (exactly) this way? - [No,] it is in exactly this way.' Which comes after five lines of contentious arguing. In Rowe, we get 'Right? - Right.' which is at once too casual and uncommittal.

Other passages show similar lapses in attention to detail. Plato's discussion of artefacts in book X has plagued commentators forever, because it's unclear why or how Plato can correlate human artefacts to (allegedly) timeless Forms. While Rowe's notes are characteristically informative of what's going on in these passages, and warn readers of the potential inconsistenties on artefact Forms, his translation looks rather unsure, tendentious even.

Plato's discussion of artefacts, especially of furnitures, centres on the term skeuê, which has a broad and a narrow meaning. On the narrow one, σκευή means furnishing, specifically `equipment, attire, apparel' (LSJ s.v.). In Republic, book X, translators like Lee (1974) and Griffith (2000) render σκευή, not as furnishing, but as furniture, given that Plato illustrates the term by the examples of a table and a couch.

On the broader meaning, conveyed by the cognate adjective σκευαστός, the term conveys the entire class of things `prepared by art, artificial' (LSV s.v.), and is opposed to natural things, things produced by and in nature (φυτευτός), in Republic 510a and 515c.

Plato's discussion moves from the narrow usage (in 596b1, b5) to the broader one (596c6). Traditionally, translators convey this by translating the first use as 'furniture' (e.g. Lee and Griffith) and then go to 'artifice'.

Rowe, however, is less clear. He begins with the fully generic translation of skeuê as `product(s)' for 596b, picking up the term from his equally tendentious translation of μῑ́μησις in 595c8 as ` imitation' (brackets mine to indicate his additions), and at 596c Rowe changes gear to render skeuê as `manufactured items'. No attendant note is given, and readers are left to wonder, as they have for generations, what explains this sudden change of pace.

I'm not sure Rowe's approach is superior or inferior to Lee's and Griffith's, but it indicates to me abundantly that one can't rely on his translation without comparing it to others. I doubt he would disagree. At the same time, his earlier efforts on Statesman and Nicomachean Ethics have, in my opinion, done just that - become so authoritative that one can reliably work on their basis alone.

For those reasons, I'd heavily recommend customers interested in Plato's masterpiece to purchase Rowe's translation. It's clearly superior to many competitors out there. At the same time, Rowe will supplement, but not supplant, earlier efforts, particulary those of Lee and Griffith.

As far as the publisher is concerned, Penguin can be congratulated for sponsoring a new translation so soon after revising Lee's twice in the past ten years, under the careful leadership of Melissa Lane and Rachana Kamtekar.

At the same time, something is lost in the transition. I can't speak for Lane's, but Kamtekar's version of Lee offered helpful diagrams and illustrations in notes and appendices. Undergraduates, not to mention lay readers, find a lot of Plato's text hardgoing without the occasional image to explain how things 'hang together'. Plato's simile of the Line in book V, for one, is incredibly densely presented, as is the 'Spindle of Necessity' in Book VIII. Kamtekar's edition had helpful illustrations on such points, and retained Lee's wonderful introductions to sub-sections of the main text, which set the scene and pre-empted some of the more current misunderstandings that twentieth and twenty first century readers are prone to. This is now replaced by Rowe's own (3-page) synopsis of the dialogue, which is frankly a poor man's substitute for Lee.

For reasons beyond me, Penguin decided to kill this material. Rowe's notes and appendices are entirely devoid of imagery.

And, while we are at it, Rowe's reading list is, if anything, twice as short as Kamtekar's, and no longer comes into neatly categorized themes of the Republic. Writings on aesthetics had to suffer in particular. While I'm glad to see Verity Harte's and Myles Burnyeat's efforts recognized in this area, Alexander Nehamas' older - and equally good if not superior - offerings have been chopped off. The same is true for a great many other essays and books that, I feel, deserves mention to a first time audience coming to Plato. Rowe sees fit to mention Julia Annas' work on Plato. As I said in my review of her 'Introduction', this reputation is frankly undeserved and compares very poorly against recent alternatives, most of them omitted by Rowe.

In the end, then, the book is a mixed result of the very variety I've come to expect from Rowe. Top notch translation, but a tad tendentious when it comes to the work of other scholars. Still, I'm very happy with the purchase, and would recommend it warmly to others.

It may feel like having a tooth pulled, but it really is something that everyone should read. Important to know how this philosophy had an influence on our own government system.

Updating Jewett by authenticating the past.

Excellent interpretative essay; translation is easy to read and tracks the original Greek somewhat better than the standard Jewett text.

Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days, by Karl Doenitz

The story of the last world war, as told by Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz himself. His memoir covers his early career with submarines in the First World War and follows both his successes and failures through the Second World War, with great detail on the way the U-boat campaign was waged, as told by the man who invented U-boat tactics.

Doenitz includes details of the U-boat campaigns during the Second World War as well as the opinions, ideas and commentary on the period. Of particular interest are the comments regarding British and American conduct during the war. An important social document, and an invaluable source for any student of the last war.

He became the last Fhrer of Germany after Hitler's suicide in May 1945 and the book’s subtitle, Ten Years and Twenty Days, is a direct reference to the time Karl Doenitz spent in Spandau Prison having been convicted of war crimes following trial at Nuremberg.

An Excellent Account of Hitler's successor.
By Ned Middleton
Ten Years and Twenty Days is a direct reference to the 10 years Karl Doenitz spent as a U Boat commander and the 20 days he spent as Hitler's successor as Fuhrer of Germany. I had stated previously in this review that the period related to his time in Spandau jail which was 10 years and I am grateful for being corrected on that point.

As an English boy born in 1950 and growing up in a post-war Britain, we would play games where the Germans always lost - just like Cowboys and Indians. Much later in life, I began to research various ships and shipwrecks through my scuba diving and the name of Karl Doenitz came up time and again. Over many years I came to respect this man for the way in which he conducted both himself and his branch of the war with Britain. I consider him to have been an honourable enemy of my country. Yes, he was convicted of War Crimes, but it says much for the respect that this man engendered that over 100 senior Allied Officers expressed their disappointment at his sentence. But then, to the victor go the spoils and the one man to succeed Hitler was never going to remain a free man when others were being executed!

Having read so many accounts of this once great Admiral before reading his own memoirs, it is clear to me he was convicted of no more a crime than "being one of the enemy" and it was for that he served his ten years at Spandau. Others, of course, were directly responsible for the great human atrocities of WW2 and it was they who were either sentenced to death of life imprisonment.

I am sure there are those who will disagree with my assessment of this man - and, indeed, their own assessment may be more accurate. Nevertheless, this book reveals a great deal about an honourable man and is one which should be read by all those with an interest in Karl Doenitz the German Naval Officer and Karl Doenitz the last Fuhrer - who's first task on succeeding Hitler was to seek peace.

Railroaded.
By Frank Hasty
Doenitz was a "soldier" doing his job, and he was very good at it. With earlier and better support from Hitler he could have made our victory much more difficult and painful. He could have extended the war for a year or more cost, thousands if not millions of lives and possibly turned the British Isles into a smoking battlefield.
They say the difference between a "Patriot" and a "War Criminal" depends on whether your side that won or the one that lost. Doenitz spent ten years in prison as a result of being on the losing side. There were many, many criminals serving Hitler but Doenitz was not one of them.
I enjoyed the book as history and as an accurate a portrayal of the "Submarine War" as we are likely to find.

Bad Topedos
By HKS
Full of facts about the U Boat War. Interesting things, like problems with magnetic torpedo detonators not working in Norway and because the US had identical problems with the torpedo detonators. Many more interesting things, like how Doenitz and Montgomery agreed for more time to let eastern refugees make it to the western sector before surrender, whereas Eisenhower had no such intensions. RMS Laconia incident, the ship had six inch guns like a warship. After being torpedoed, the British locked the Italian prisoners below, letting them drown. Also interesting is the fact that Doenitz wanted 300 submarines and never got them. Only 5% of steel was allocated for submarines. Most of the steel came from Sweden. And the fact that at the end of the war, the Enigma code was not broken due to higher encoding complexity (from allied archives end of book).
