Life Improvement Book If You Are Ready for It

On one hand, the Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield is a book I wish I had read many years ago as in the duration of reading it I have benefited greatly. I have improved my meditation practice. I have become more at peace in my work and social life. I have stopped pretending and trying to seem like something I am not. I have found small moments of total freedom which I find are expanding day by day. On the other hand, I am not sure that I was ready for it until now. To benefit from its content, one has to be open to meditation, Buddhist psychology, and ready for changes to the core. I strongly recommend this book if you are ready for it. In fact, I have already personally recommended it several times.

The Best Book I Ever Read

This book saved my life when my beloved wife Judy was dying of thyroid cancer in 2013, 2014 and 2015 when I was her primary caregiver. She died on March 4, 2015. This book opened up a new world for me of meditation, mindfulness, kindness, compassion, deep spirituality, integrity, wisdom, and especially for me, courage and perseverance in the face of this very difficult life challenge that most of us will face one day. I also had the great honor of attending a recent 5-day retreat at Kripalu in western Massachusetts led by Jack Kornfield. It was an amazing spiritual experience that continues to change my life in very positive ways, one day at a time. The Wise Heart is the best book I have ever read in my life so far and I highly recommend it to my fellow readers and spiritual searchers.

A Must Read for Buddhists And New To Buddhism

I love Jack Kornfield's writing. His descriptions of incidents that have changed his life, how meditation and understanding of the psychology of meditation and Buddhism made his life what it is, is educational and inspirational. If I had found this subject decades ago, my life would have taken a different path.
From the bit I've read so far, I've concluded that my choices were part of the journey that led me to this.

AMAZING

Ahren Sanders has done it again with Reed's Reckoning!!!

"She was my touchdown. She was my trophy. She was everything. Even after she left me, I tried to find her. I didn't want to believe it was over."

Reed and Ari met in college and fell madly in love very quickly. They had their future all planned out. He was close to being signed to the NFL and she would follow him anywhere. Due to unfortunate events and meddling they break up and go their separate ways. Misunderstanding and manipulation ended things without a word. Each is left broken and devastated. Reed never knows that Ari had planned to tell him she was pregnant with his child.

Fast forward four years. Reed Matthews has made it big in the NFL and all his dreams came true except the void in his heart left there by Ari. Air is a single mom of a little boy. She has never gotten over losing Reed. She has lived a modest lifestyle with her circle of friends and family. Her best friend Luke has been by her side helping raise her son Davis. When they go away on a business trip, Luke and Davis encounter Reed on the beach. He is mesmerized by the little boy who looks exactly like him. Luke rushes off with Davis and cautions Ari that Reed is back.

Once Reed realizes what has happened he puts a plan into action. He is determined to by in his son's life and rekindle his lost love in the process. He will stop at nothing to win Ari back and solve the mystery that tore them apart four years ago.

This book will keep you up all night! What a page turner. It has it all....mystery, angst, romance, and heat! These characters jump off the page. I found myself screaming at Ari for her stubbornness. I was rooting for her to give Reed another chance. The chemistry and tension between them is electric! Reed is nothing if not persistent. I love a man who knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it. Definitely a struggle for power and control between these two. He is an Alpha male all the way and so hot!

Totally book boyfriend material. It is written in his and her point of view. I was hooked on page one. A great plot that keeps you guessing. Filled will many interesting supporting characters many of whom I hope she will write more about in the future.

A Second chance at Love

This is a beautifully written story that gives everyone hope that true love will avail--regardless of the obstacles. The characters had depth as well as believability. When they went through their drama or pain you felt it. When the romance grew HOT(and it did) you were involved. Rich in detail(one of the many things I love about the author) it's just a spellbinding tale of two people trying to hold on to love lost. I loathe TMI, so I won't be spilling any trade secrets. If you want a satisfying and sexy read, this is it...you will not be disappointed.

thoughts on reed's reckoning

My heart truly broke and felt for Reed. So much he went through. So much loss and lost time. So much taken away from him and the betrayals he is faced with. I am surprised he didn't break.

His love for Ari oozed out of his pours and his love for Davis was just beautiful. Ari and Reed's love stood time and betrayal. Heartache and anger. I understand Ari's hesitancy but I do not like her decision about Davis. Reed deserved more. Davis did as well.

Luke oh my loved him. He deserves everything good and more to come his way. His love of Ari and her family. His protection of her and how he embraced Reed once he saw he wasn't out to hurt Ari but regain his life and future and his love back had Luke warm up to him. Granny Katy was a hoot. Loved her book ladies who groped Reed. To to funny. But seeing Reed and Davis together tugs at the heart.

The mystery was interesting and kept you on your toes. The intimacy was so hot but my favorite was when Davis asked mommy is she loved God because of her always screaming for him. To cute this kid. As we got to see their love rekindled we saw how deeply their love ran and also how deeply the betrayal towards them and the heartache was as well.
a love separated by jealously and insecurity. A betrayal that shows how far some go in their own selfish needs and desires. And how with a little TLC this love can be brought back and sizzle once again. A wonderful story of love rekindled and how family comes in all packages not just blood.

Great overview of almost all aspects of PU. I have years of experience on PU materials and thought I knew about the whole picture of this field. But after reading half the book, I already found lots of helpful information. I would recommend this book to anyone who works with PU, from students who want to learn more besides from textbooks to experienced researchers who need to stay up-to-date.

Runaway Emotions - by Jeff Schreve

This book is based on a series of sermons by Jeff Schreve, pastor of First Baptist Church in Texarkana, Texas. In it, he explores eight different emotions and why they hit us so hard: embarrassment, loneliness, frustration, worry, anger, guilt, discontentment, and depression. Even more, he goes on to describe the potentially positive impact that these emotions can have on us - if we will let them, instead of either reacting negatively or ignoring the emotions altogether.

I so wish I could give it more stars, because I was so hopeful about this book, but I can only give this book three stars. I do appreciate the author's use of personal stories as well as his Biblical guidance for handling negative emotions that have the potential to runaway with us. I also think that this book has the possibility to be an excellent "in a nutshell" resource for someone looking for some general guidance on dealing with strong, negative emotions.

However, as is touched upon the introduction, this book is written in the style of a sermon series. I have nothing at all against sermon series or even books based upon them, but when written in the style that a sermon is spoken, they are difficult to read and stay "plugged into" along the way. This book would have been much easier to follow and focus on had I listened to it as an audiobook. It would have been an interesting sermon series to hear, and I have no doubt that I would have learned from it - but the writing style made it difficult to keep myself from skimming instead of reading closely.

I also feel like the chapters themselves did not go into much detail or depth about managing and/or learning from each negative emotion - of course, this is to be expected if you think about each chapter as if it were a single Sunday's sermon. Therefore, I think this book would be an excellent tool to have on hand for someone to pull off the shelf and read the chapter that focuses upon the negative emotion with which they're struggling - a "spring board" of sorts, where they can then dig deeper elsewhere if needed.

All in all, this book was worth reading but I didn't leave it feeling I'd learned anything new or that I would reread it again in the future. If you're looking for some general guidance on how to tame & learn from negative emotions before they run away with you instead of in-depth guidance, this would be an excellent book to read or recommend.

Good Intro Book on Dealing with Emotions

God has designed emotions, both positive and negative, for a purpose. Think of emotions like an alarm that picks up smoke signals in a house. It exists to alert those living in the home that a fire is burning somewhere, and so it is with our emotions: The alert us to what's going on inside of our hearts. For example, according to Schreve, when we experience frustration, our "desire for meaning or purpose is on fire" (i.e. our feelings of purpose are being shaken with). In his book, Runaway Emotions: Why You Feel the Way You Do and What God Wants You to Do About It, author Jeff Schreve takes the readers by the hand to show them the deeper meaning to the following emotions: anger, frustration, depression, worry, discontentment, and more.

Runaway Emotions is a good beginning book on the topic since it's written clearly and is easy to understand. Personally though, having read other books on the same subject (by authors such as Paul Tripp, Ed Welch, etc.), I did not think this book went into great detail or expanded on much other than the mere basics. This makes it a great read, as I said before, for someone who's just starting to look into emotions in relation to God and scripture, but I would not recommend it as a resource for someone who's looking for something "meaty" and deep. (After all, whole books have been written by Christian counselors on emotions such as depression, anger, etc. and Schreve only talks about each emotion for one chapter, leaving much unsaid.) While reading it I found myself thinking too often how I already knew quite a bit of the information being presented already, making it an un-challenging read with little digging or interacting with the book for me personally, but this of course, won't be true for everyone who picks up a copy. Schreve preached a sermon series on emotions, which then led to him writing this book, and as the reader this seemed very obvious throughout it's entirety. By this I don't mean it was "preachy" in it's tone, but only so much can be said in a sermon (I keep coming back to the whole lack of depth issue), and so at times it seemed as though the author was giving a quick fix to dealing with negative emotions, when in reality, this is not always the case. Band-aids cannot heal staph infections. Overall, the book was relatively fast paced, making it a quick read. So a satisfactory introductory book, but for the person who's already well-versed on the subject matter or looking for something more in-depth, it may not be the book for you.

A good idea for a good book that could've been so much more!

Negative emotions can play a positive role in our lives, and even though they may be uncomfortable or even dark and crippling, they have a strong purpose and can serve as warning bells. Jeff Schreve shows us how emotional pain is like a smoke alarm warning us when something is out of order in this book.

Jeff Schreve chooses eight dark emotions (embarrassment, loneliness, frustration, worry, anger, guilt, discontentment, depression) and then explains how we must ask ourselves why we are feeling them, what they are warning us of, and how we can turn them around so that God can do something great. Emotions are like smoke alarms - they can help us do find the real fire so that we can extinguish the flames and get things right on the inside. Schreve uses men and women of the Bible as examples for each emotion as well as illustrations from his own life. This book is biblically grounded and sound.

But I didn't find anything new and enlightening in this book. I was excited about the potential of the theme, but disappointed in the content. Schreve addresses emotions in a simplistic and generalized fashion, and while he appropriately applies Biblical truths - God loves you, knows you, has a plan for you, so know who you are in Christ - he just scratches the surface.

I would recommend this book for new Christians or perhaps for parents or youth leaders who want to dialogue about these emotions with older children or teenagers and guide them to maturity.

Decent Textbook, but Could be Better

This textbook was mandatory for me to buy for my Data Structures course in college. This is an okay textbook. It is a decent secondary source as long as your professor is good at teaching, luckily for me, that is the case.
A lot of the examples that are given to explain certain data structures are long winded and do not help at all. They are generally over complicated and are hard to understand. Also they also seem to contradict a lot of the common and more popular uses of java at times, which can be frustrating. My last gripe with this textbook is that it just decides to almost completely disregard Iterators, which are quite important to understand.

The definitions are pretty solid, however, and so this book is a solid secondary source. It will help partially confused on a topic, but it is hard to fully grasp a topic just from this textbook, in my opinion. I would recommend professors to try to find a better alternative to this one.

Not good for learning it yourself

Forced to buy this book for a data structures in Java class.

This textbook is far too wordy for its own good. Author tries to be witty by explaining something incorrectly for a page and then stating "Oops, I lied, this is actually how its done:"

When I am trying to learn something I don't want to be given confusing explanations. Chapters have long winded walls of text that never seem to cut to the point - rarely is anything put into simple terms.

The assignments inside the book are not too great either - they tend to have vague directions and without instructor clarification it is very difficult to work with this book unless you are already well versed with the author's specific implementations of the data structures covered. The directions are vague enough that you will end up writing code that has already been provided by the author.

For such an expensive textbook, it leaves a lot to be desired.

For the second year student.

The first thing that a computer science student studies is usually a programming language that becomes the foundation for future studies. Most of the programming exercises he works on are chosen to illustrate programming techniques. The book presumes that the student knows at least the basic principles of the Java language. In learning the language the student has written several programs. But he has not begun to approach real world problems that usually involve the processing of some kind of data. The main theme of the book is to familiarize the student with the techniques and procedures that have been developed to ease the processing of different types of data.

There were some complaints about errors found in the first edition. While this is regrettable, it is almost impossible to produce a book of 800+ pages without some errors creeping through the editing process. Most of the errors have been fixed. But there are still a few, one that I found more amusing rather than serious was in the address of the website dedicated to the book. It's a com domain, and the com is left off of the given address. Oh well, I certainly couldn't write a program 800 pages long that would be completely bug free.
