Excellent

I have been a programmer for many years and have read many game books including topics for XNA, DIRECTX, IOS, OPENGL and UNITY. None of these books armed me with a slow progression of mastery until I read this book. I must be dense but for the past 5 years I would dive into a study of game development (purely as a challenge since the day job is all business) but would get frustrated with the lack of reusable knowledge to transfer for my own small applications. The authors of this book focused on the joy of programming and bringing games to life.

Why the book stands apart::

- The authors were careful not to explain or bring up topics not yet covered.
- The authors laid out a practical approach of creating the functionality and the theory.
- Taking time to explain so applying this approach to other projects would be reasonable
- The applications created were all very different implementations of the Sprite Kit each showing very different capabilities
- The usage of the new objective c blocks, storyboard etc., Most game books are behind in their examples
- The “hiding” of the vector , point math so I could stay focused helped quite a bit
- The bonus chapters especially the creating art work – it has been a mystery for quite some time how these assets work
- The game center chapters for Circuit Racer were excellent and practical.
- The Circuit Racer tutorial was awesome

The SpriteKit framework and Ray's book is all you need for great IOS 2D gaming.

One of the best I've seen.

I have been playing with computers since the early 1980s and have read my fair share of tutorial books on many topics.

This book ranks among the best. In fact, I would be hard pressed to think of another that is so well done.

The topics are explained in a direct but digestible manner. The "challenges" at the end of the chapters are indeed challenging but (so far for me) not impossible. If nothing else, the challenges force you to look beyond the content of the book and they truly help you to understand the material.

If you have a bit of Objective C knowledge and a willingness to learn and understand how to use sprite kit, you will not regret buying this book. I highly recommend you check out the author's web site. Do a search for Ray Wenderlich. Take a look at the written tutorials on sprite kit (and the many other free tutorials) and them come back here and buy this book.

UPDATE 4-26-14

I noticed the other day (as Texan man pointed out) that there is no index in this book. It's still a great resource but the lack of an index has forced me to change my rating from 5 to 4 stars. See Texan man's review posted on 4-26-14 for a way of using Amazon's "Search this book" feature as a workaround for the missing index.

Absolutely perfect

This is one of the rare computer books that I am glad to own in printed form. I have used it so much that I would not enjoy reading it from a PDF. I am going through it carefully page by page and adding notes and stickies.

I have written games in other platforms and found this book was an excellent place to start with Sprite Kit. I would think that anyone with some Objective-C under their belt would be OK with this book. It quickly moves into more technical matter, but you need that material to write a game. Before you are even at page 150, you have a working game with a main menu, scene transitions, and sound.

The amount of material that is covered in this book is really simply mind-blowing. Everything from touches, movement, and all the way up to Game Center and multiplayer on your Apple TV. In between you get physics, emitters, transitions, tile maps, etc.

There is also a lot of good advice about designing games in general. Where to optimize, math tips, etc.

The projects in this book are fun and very informative.

Extremely well edited. I have not found any typos yet.

Very few technical errors, and there is an active online forum where you can find them corrected.

Excellent guide for overcoming loneliness

David D. Burns, M.D., has been a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine since 1995, the same school where he received his M.D. degree in the 1970's. From 1975 to 1995, Dr. Burns served on the clinical faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and served as Acting Chief of Psychiatry at the Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He has also written: Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy; The Feeling Good Handbook; and Ten Days to Self-Esteem. He teaches workshops for the public and continuing-education seminars for mental health professionals. He was recently featured in a 90-minute nationally televised PBS program on depression entitled "Feeling Good"....
Though this book is primarily directed at single people struggling to find a compatible mate, I also found it very useful, even though I am happily married, for two major reasons: (a) Loneliness. Dr. Burns believes that loneliness is not a function of who you are with, or not with, but arises out of not treating yourself well and enjoying your own company. Thus, even people who are blessed with a wonderful mate can get lonely from time to time. Dr. Burns shows you how to head off loneliness at its source by building your self-esteem through the technique of treating yourself with care and respect. People who treat themselves badly not only feel badly about themselves, they get very needy. When you are needy, you tend to become very self-centered, and other people very naturally shy away from that. Who wants to be with someone who is clinging to you out of desperation rather than unselfish, generous interest and affection? (b) Distorted Thinking. Dr. Burns says that the way we interpret the actions of the people around us affects how happy or unhappy we are--and how successful we are in getting and keeping close relationships. He provides many simple, practical suggestions for changing negative, irrational thinking so that we can prevent depression, anxiety and general misery both inside ourselves and within our relationships.
I highly recommend this insightful, practical book to people in every type of relationship situation, whether unhappily alone, unhappily together, or happily together and wanting to keep it that way. Dr. Burns's advice can help fix or prevent any relationship problems you might have.

IF YOU'RE A SHY PERSON, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK

This book changed the way I thought about myself. I will never be the same again. There are so many helpful things in this book that I can't list them all, but what helped me the most was the realization that I am not a freak. Sounds simple, but I believed that I was, ever since high school. Now I know that I am completly normal, and life is full of possibilities. If you are afraid of people, think that your coworkers are thinking bad thoughts about you, can't even approach someone of the opposite sex, or are just shy, you need to get this book. You don't have to stay stuck where you are. Don't let life pass you by.

About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he received a B.A. in Sociology. "Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised." This fascination led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his masters’ thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain. Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology. He has taught introductory sociology for 30 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. "I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing." Dr. Schaefer is author of the third edition of Sociology: A Brief Introduction (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Dr. Schaefer is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups now in its eighth edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, second edition. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 1994-1995. Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to "look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. It will also make you more aware of peoples’ different needs and interests — and perhaps more ready to work for the common good, while still recognizing the individuality of each person."

Details, details, no principles.

I bought this book by mistake, having confused Sparql with Spark SQL. Of course, no mentioning of that similarity is in the book, because the attitude of the author is that you must know better, and if not its your problem. Since I have bought it, I decided to get familiar with the subject. But here again same problem. The author does not try explain any basic ideas or principles. Having written a couple of meaningless for me lines as "explanation", he immediately pass to technical details. Thats what this book is all about: details without general principles. It may be useful for professionals, but it is useless as an introduction. So I put 3 stars, because the details may be good for somebody who needs them, but for me this book is useless.

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to purchase a book on wine... but a friend recommended it and I'm so glad he did. Very well done. The author's humor comes through in spades; while he takes the subject of purchasing and drinking wine seriously, he doesn't take himself too seriously. I felt like I was getting straight talk. At last, I don't feel like I have to have 10 different wine glasses and know which one to use with which wine?! The art and infographics make it very readable and the paper choice makes it a joy to flip through. I'm actually considering giving it as a gift which is big because I'm busy trying to decrease the number of books in my own home. But this one is a pleasure to peruse --- you could read a page or two at a time and come back to it; or use it as a reference at other times. Try it. I think you'll enjoy --- and learn while you do.

Thankfully, this book does what it says.

Mr. Oldman has so much information to offer, and this book is like having the opportunity to have a personal conversation and grill him with everything you ever wanted to know. Many of us have seen him at the myriad food festivals he attends, but the problem is when you go see him, he is so inundated by beautiful screaming women (is this guy the fifth Beatle?) that you can't get anywhere near him to ask questions. Now we have the book so that between this and the opportunities to see him at festivals, you'll get a lifetime worth of great wine information.

Oldman can probably afford drink like a billionaire. I can't. Thankfully, this book does what it says.

Great Read and Useful Advice for finding joy in all types and aspects of wine

First, this book is a great read, cover-to-cover. If I didn't drink wine (I do), it would still be a joy to read. The observations, insights and stories are worth the price of admission, even if the reader does not plan to put the book's knowledge to its intended use.

Second, the book is a guide to enjoying wine and life. There is a whole world of wine between high-end burgundy and wine with "lipstick, cupcakes or feet" on the label and Oldman urges his readers to explore and enjoy it. In Oldman's world, wine is not merely consumed, it is experienced and his book ensures the entire process can be savored.

Third, Oldman arms the unwary with the tools necessary to enjoy wine and the winebuying experience. Oldman gives the reader tips to assess where a sommelier's allegiances lie and then urges the reader to press the sommelier to be an engaged guide to wines on and off the list. (See off list bottles p. 101)

difficult reference

Although I found this to be somewhat usefull I thought that many of the questions were not appropriate for a generalist while preparing for the board exam. I was perhaps more frustrated by the number of mistakes that I found in the answer key and explanation section of the text where the answer did not correspond to the letter choice given.

Extremely useful guide

As noted in previous reviews and comments, this guide is extremely useful. It is useful as a plant guide in its intended region (and surrounding regions likely) and also as a general model for how to construct plant guides that are useful. Its key features are good organization of plants by features to identify them, inclusion of BOTH line drawings and photographs of each species, inclusion of numerous types of plants (grasses, mosses, etc) rather than only 'wildflowers' like so many less useful guides, and well-done and interesting descriptions of the plants (including ethnobotany information, such as how humans have used the plants). Among plant guides, this simply has been one of the most useful purchases I have made. Also, the publisher (Lone Pine) has published guides for some other regions. This publisher's guides generally are among the best, as many of them contain the excellent features listed above. The utility of having both a line drawing and a photograph of a species to identify it cannot be understated.

Review of Forest Plants of Central Ontario

I used this plant guide in Killarney Provincial Park (Ontario) and found it useful for identifying major plant species of the area. This guide is interesting because it includes both a photograph and a line drawing of each plant featured in the guide. Plants are divided into lifeforms (e.g., shrub) and descriptions of each plant within a lifeform are contained in a separate section of the guide. The keys for plant identification are not detailed, but the objective of this book is to provide a simple, non-technical guide for plant identification. The authors meet this objective. For more detailed plant identification, a technical botanical guide (Michigan Flora by Ed Voss) probably should be used instead of Forest Plants of Central Ontario. I recommend Forest Plants of Central Ontario as an interesting, non-technical guide for identifying major plant species of the region. It is appropriate for more advanced botanists as a handy field guide and is also appropriate for investigators who have no formal botanical training but who want to quickly learn to identify plants.

From trees to liverworts in one book

This book covers a small area of Eastern North America, so it is easier to identify plants that you might find in say the Ottawa Valley, without ploughing through all the plants that only occur further south. It includes trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, sedges & rushes, ferns & allies, mosses & liverworts and lichens, all in one book. For the non-botanist this is the best book for this area (including West Quebec). Unlike other wildflower books that concentrate on flowers, this shows and describes leaves and fruits, making identification easier at times when there are no flowers. Charts and keys at the start of each section help in identification.

I simply wanted to see how social work's philosophy of change and intervention differed from counseling and psychological theories/models. This text was quite helpful for that purpose. Buying this book is an inexpensive way to introduce oneself to social work theories, especially if one is a student looking to enter into a helping profession of some sort.

I hate reading about theory but I am prepping for the SW licensing exam and my supervisor recommended this book. It makes pretty hefty concepts easy to understand. It is written in a way that is easy to read.

The descriptions of social work theories in this book are beautifully summarised in a clear and easy to read way. I found that in some cases I drew more from some of the chapters that I had from much more detailed texts on individual theories. The introduction to social work in general and the use of theories is also one of the best I read. I recommend this book to both students and practitioners wishing to 'refresh' their knowledge.
